Defying stereotypes

Ilaer

I was just thinking about stereotypes, as evidenced by my 'Stereotypes' thread, strangely enough, and I started thinking about how some people defy them. For example, in Britain there is a strong stereotype that people who wear so-called 'hoodies' are yobs; I'm a fairly good counter-example. I'm a fairly intelligent Grammar school student with a strong sense of morality and a keen interest in academic subjects such as physics, linguistics, philosophy, mathematics and various other things. I spend virtually all of my time indoors and I tend to be relatively nice to other people in real life and on the Internet, unless you count being depressed by the apparent stupidity of many humans as not nice (since I'm the one who suffers with the depression, doesn't that make me the victim? :p).

How about you?
Do you defy any stereotypes about your nation/group?

I was born in Mississippi, raised in Alabama for five years.
My great-great Grandfather was a Grand Wizard of the KKK. His father fought for the Confederates in the Civil War (although it was apparently because 'those damn feds' burned his barn down or something, as opposed to silly things like states rights or slavery).

And yet, here I am, champion Fence-Sitter and almost-but-not-quite agnostic.

That's possibly the most interesting defiance of stereotype that I've ever read. I congratulate you on that; I wouldn't advise telling many people that one of your ancestors was a member of the KKK though, never mind a Grand Wizard; they probably wouldn't take it very well. It'd be a bit like saying that you were a descendant of Hitler, knowing people's inability to judge a person by their individual characteristics.

They usually calm down when they hear that another great-to-the-somethingth grandfather won the CMoH for the Union when he and his men charged a Confederate cannon battery with nothing but knives and bayonettes :P

my songs are about my life, and my views, I don't think any of them are about waiting until I am married or going to church......at least I don't remember them being about that.

I am the only Christian in the band, the bass player is a Lavey Satanist, the drummer is an agnostic and the guitar player is.......actually I don't know, she doesn't talk about religion much.

I am in 3 bands actually, but two don't count, since one of them only plays one venue and the other is with my kids.

I don't really care. I just hate it when people make assumptions based on ignorance.

I like being local anyway, the last time one of my bands got a recording contract with a label all hell broke loose, and we don't speak anymore. Being a local band has it's rewards, I can go be in my band, and still be home with my kids whenever I want. In fact, most of the time my kids can come see me play.

Well, I saw this on the Stereotypes thread...
yes, that's the way you are stereotyped here, and your tourists don't seem to contradict that.

some others:
japanese: always take photographs of everything.
british: drink tea like mentioned above, are also always serious (stiff upperlip).
french: not very clean.
netherlands: stupid (and everything that's bad)

the cool thing about being as small as Begium is that there is no stereotype for us.

I think a lot more people DEFY stereotypes than actually fit them...

Especially when you get the stereotype of, say, a homosexual man. You get the idea of someone prancing about in a dress maybe, or talking about fashion in a really high pitched voice.

So it will come as a shock to some to learn that I speak in a low bass voice, hate dressing like a girl - heck, I can't even stand looking at another guy in drag. I do -not- like taking things up my ---, I could care less what clothing I wear, I don't hang around in bars and get drunk, I don't sleep around, I'm not a drug addict, I've never attempted suicide, my parents are not religious christians that are out to get me nor are they super-supportive, I do have some female friends but my best friend is a 100% straight guy. I do not regularly dance, I am an introvert, but I am also not an emo (Hate wearing makeup). The only part of the stereotype I even come close to fitting is that I am a bit of an actor and artiste.

...and yet I'm gay.

I think there's supposed to be a subtle difference; not that I can remember what it is.Optimism is a tendency to look on the bright side of things. Pessimism is the opposite. You could say one's a construtive worldview, and the other's defeatist. Cynicism has nothing to do with either, but (usually) refers to the idea that people act out of selfishness (not to be confused with self-interest).I'm often depressed in any case; thrice in my life have I suffered from serious depression. Now if you were an optimist, you'd prolly start eating vitamins, excercising, forcing yourself to socialise more & seek professional help - because those things tend to be sufficient remedy. If you were a pessimist, you'd prolly assume they wouldn't suffice, don't bother trying, and thus proving your pessimism correct.

Do you defy any stereotypes about your nation/group?

I can't think of a single gender stereotype I don't defy. And it's not even intentionally defiance in most cases, it's just that the stereotypes are such bullshit that simply existing is enough to defy them.

I don't think I defy any particular stereotypes about my ethnic group. Of course, I don't really know of many such stereotypes, so I might be wrong on that.

I conform to most of the stereotypes about people with my "religious orientation."

When it comes to stereotypes about my nation, I think I defy most of them, but not all.

Defying stereotypes is as easy as education. People who are stereotyped are usually because of the stereotype-ers lack of education, or the other way around. Either the person is ignorant and thinks they deserve a stereotype or the person is intelligent and thinks everyone of that sort are stupid. Get me? Education is key.

And I'm a white, Christian American from rural North Dakota, and I don't drink alcohol. Believe me, around here that is a stereotype.

And I'm a white, Christian American from rural North Dakota, and I don't drink alcohol. Believe me, around here that is a stereotype. I thought Christian Americans were very down on drinkā€¦ or is that just in the South?

Stereotypes tend to be based on fact, and in some cases the stereotypees actually go out of their way to reinforce the stereotypes. Think black gangstas, the Irish in NY, or Aussies anywhere.

I break a lot of stereotypes.

For an easy example - I'm female, and as a child I was something of a mathematical prodigy. I started competing in math and science competitions when I was about nine years old, and was even at that age both amused and annoyed by the shocked reactions of boys (and their parents, sadly enough) when I won.

Then, of course, there's the fact that, as a mathematical prodigy, I abandoned math completely after high school to study music and English, which I'd always liked more. That's a bit odd, too.

I'm also a socially competent geek, a female gamer, an alumna of an elite New England college who's not remotely wealthy and who finds "preppy" fashion idiotic, a liberal Midwesterner, a skirt-wearing tomboy, and, for all you musicians, an alto without back hair. :p

As a US citizen with 50% German and 50% GB mix (have a book detailing ancestors back to Mayflower)-

1. I hate the French.
2. I laugh at ignorant jokes, including racist ones. (But I'm not, believe me.)
3. I eat fast food for my regular diet.
4. I like to drive my gas-guzzling, yet fast automobile.

How I break the mold-

1. I'm not afraid of Muslims (I'm friends with one, actually, the only difference between them and a normal person is THEY ARE NOT ALLOWED TO HAVE FUN)
2. I can actually speak a language outside of my local dialect of American English.
3. I hate football. American football, that is. I love "soccer."
4. I absolutely despise, loathe, and vehemently avoid filthy food from McDonald's.
5. I'm not mesmerized by the Eiffel Tower. It's a radio tower, with lights. I don't know how many homes or art stores I walk into, but everyone always have that damned tower.
6. I don't enjoy watching sports.
7. I don't enjoy watching the telly.
8. I call it a telly, not a TV.
9. I'm atheist and living in "The Bible Belt" of the US.
10. I can actually figure out how and why I'm not a typical American when asked.

"God bless America!"
My response: "Why, did America sneeze or something?"
