Anybody else even familiar with her? I'm quite crushed by her death. So many things I'd love to hear her take on.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Molly_Ivins
Ivins counted as her highest honors the Minneapolis police force's decision to name its mascot pig after her and her getting banned from the campus of Texas A&M University, according to a biography on the Creators Syndicate Web site.
She was fired from the New York Times for refering to a community chicken killing festival as a "gang pluck."
The paper flattened and defoliated her colorful prose. For example, it turned "a beer gut that belongs in the Smithsonian" into "a protuberant abdomen."
I'm glad they sent her back to Texas. Where she promptly got in hot water again by refering to one of the Texas lege in "If his IQ slips any lower we'll have to water him twice a day." At least the Texas paper defended her.
Below is a bit o' cut and paste. Sorry, I'm sick and lazy.
She was best known for her mastery of what one critic called the "well-informed potshot," which she generally reserved for conservative figures such as Bush (aside from "Shrub" and "Dubya" she called him "President Billy Bob Forehead"), Arnold Schwarzenegger ("a condom filled with walnuts"), and talk-show host Rush Limbaugh (whose bite was "akin to being gummed by a newt. . . . it leaves you with slimy stuff on your ankle").
She described herself as "a left-wing, aging-Bohemian journalist, who never made a shrewd career move, never dressed for success, never got married, and isn't even a lesbian, which at least would be interesting."
And I totally agree with her on the subject of my home state: "I dearly love the state of Texas, but I consider that a harmless perversion on my part, and discuss it only with consenting adults."

She indeed rocked. She was quite on top of certain asshole-in-charge's foibles and travesties.
She will be missed.
she was a defender of common sense and will be missed by those who favor intellect over loyalty.

If she had common sense, she would not be using the language that she did use. By using such language, she showed herself to be a complete idiot.
My thoughts and prayers goes out to her family but now the journalism profession is safer with one less lunatic on the loose.

Ever hear that quote about safety and freedom? Without people who are willing to rock the boat all we'll ever have is CNN. And hear about Anna Nicole's bullshit ad nauseum.

I do not consider anyone among the press who lets their political viewpoints cloud their writing to be journalists. That goes for both sides of the political spectrum.
As to Anna Nicole Smith...I could actually give a rats ass.
I'm a fan of her now that I've read about this stuff. She's funny.
...or rather, she was. Reading comprehension, Matt. Learn it.

As to Anna Nicole Smith...I could actually give a rats ass.Hence Molly Ivins being considered more of a political pundit than objective journalist. She was unabashedly liberal.

How could anybody not appreciate someone that could come up with such jewels as "that the three most overrated things in America are Mack trucks, teenage pussy, and the FBI.”

She was a columnist. She was trained as a journalist, and had committed acts of journalism in the past, but she was, in her prime, a columnist who wrote opinion pieces.

did she say she was objective? I believe in her books she called herself a hard hitting Texas Liberal. Seriosuly, at least she had integrity and was honest. That's more than can be said for many of your journalistic heroes I'm sure.
