Guilty Pleasures... NS STYLE!
... I've been thinking... yeah I know, that's what set off the smoke alarm...
Spam.
Every Forum gets em. everyone does at least one spammy post. but let's do a serious disection of a Spam thread.
I have a theory that in the environment of the forum setting, a Spam thread is necessary. It provides the forums with the brief break from the norm actually helps prevents flaming and flamewars.
sure, like everything else, too much of a good thing is bad, but then for spam, none is also bad.
I remember a time when the first three pages of NS:G held no spam. and the problem? countless reports of flaming/trolling and even merges of multiple threads. there were cries of "why is there yet another [religion/news story/ whatever] thread on this page?!"
yet when a spammy thread is introduced, the tension decreases in the forums. less flaiming and, for me anyway, a breeze waifs in to calm nerves and sooth bruised egos. an imagined phenominon or is it something else?
As I said earlier, the Spam thread offers a break in the dicussions, where posters who couldn't see eye to eye on various subjects can laugh together at some antic that LG sets in motion, or some new thing that Rhaomi discovers. or even joins in at Ruffy's antics. it a thread the can help bring people back together after being polerized by various other threads. Whether it be about which next game system to buy, or the latest DCD posting or even LG Prasing the latest MudHole he fell into, we can all sit back and forget about President Bush's latest idea, or who killed whom over what.
to me, the Spam Thread is an important part of the forum that can actually help bring down the flame level and can actually remind all of us, that differeing views isn't such a bad thing and like a nightclub, a place where people can laugh and have fun without putting pressure as to which side to take on what issue.
So what do you think about the Spam threads. and ANY MODS who happen to wander in here... what's your honest opinion about the occasional Spam Thread?

The fun police will be here to close down this thread in 5... 4... 3..
I agree. On a forum for general debate and discussion, tensions are going to run high at times, it's inevitable. The odd spam thread is what keeps us all from getting banned for flaming each other into oblivion before we even get to the 3 month mark in our posting careers.

please people. this is, for once, a serious discussion of Spam and perhaps the unobserved, and under studied effects of the occasional spam thread in a policitally charged forums like NSG.
I thought that was what Gabbly was for... :p
Also, how is that "Nederlandse" thread still alive? There's no way it's still on topic...

Odds are this will turn into a spam thread simply because you bought it up. People aren't bright like that, myself included. Perhaps a dose of serious cat would sort it out?

ah, but Spam in NSG was around before Gabbly... ;)

perhaps later... keep the Cat tethered for now. :p
but you could post your opinon and feelings about Spam threads.

I'm gonna say because none of the mods speak Dutch, and therefore none of them actualy know what the topic is.
What is the point of that thread anyway? It has to be the biggest thread in General.

I don't object to them, however I do agree with whoever it was who pointed that Ruffy can be fucking annoying.
Spam is a way for left-wingers and right-wingers to all sit down together, in peace and harmony, and talk about nonsensical crap in a fun-loving and joyous way. Even fascists love fluffle spam. Just ask The blessed chris. :p

This is about spam, not about Ruffy.

Apathetic. If they're enjoyable, that's fine, and if not, I don't exactly have to read it, do I? That being said, tons of spam-clutter can get a bit irritating. I say keep it to a dull roar.

I think the poll has something to do with threats facing Denmark...

Yep (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/forumdisplay.php?f=1227&daysprune=1&order=desc&sort=replycount). Four times as big as the Photography thread.
I don't even understand how it got that big. It's more than two years old, and, looking at the posters list, it looks like the thread only has a dozen or so regular posters. Smells like a chat thread to me...

Indeed....:p

Ruffy and spam are the same thing in the way that God and Jesus are the same thing. Though I'm not sure if Ruffy is God or Jesus.

Smells like a chat thread to me...That's because that's what it is. Just like the German thread, which petered out months ago because there weren't enough of us German speaking posters left.

Damned Dutch and their chat threads.

Nah.
If Ruffy and spam are the Father and the Son, then the Holy Spirit must be...

Stupid! >_<
(Especially since I actually called it the "Nederlandse thread" :p)
I made the same mistake the other day, when I was trying to use a translator to translate the page. I always get Denmark/Danish and Netherlands/Dutch mixed up....
I'm gonna say because none of the mods speak Dutch, and therefore none of them actualy know what the topic is.

actually that distinction belongs to The Paradise Beach Club #9 (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=462248) with 10969 posts.
and Paradise Beach Club 10 has 12408 posts, but that was moved to spam.

320 pages? The Office Party thread got moved to spam long before that. Most things get sent to spam around 60 pages or so. What the fuck?

Paradise Beach (http://www.z3.invisionfree.com/Paradise_Beach) > The Paradise Beach Club (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=462248) yeah... agreed... so?

I wonder if it is spam though.....

No point, just saying.
I wonder if it is spam though..... which begs the question.
if a thread that has no point yet is not trollish/flamish and baitish in nature, is it still spam?
especially since some people also agree that the presence of those threads can and does help lower tensions to avoid flamewars.

I would think that it is spam, by definition.

I was a disciple of Lanna and the Provinceans (members of the region The Province) We all spam. It's kinda fun, and you get ROFLCOPTER out of it.

a spam thread or two is definitely a good thing to have on on the front page. they really are, as you say, a great place to cool off in a debate and perhaps notice that the person you've been almost flaming for the past half hour is actually quite funny/friendly when they're not discussing the matter in hand. they make for a much friendlier atmosphere in general. that is until certain people go squealing to the mods because of their own personal grudges or a "dog in the manger" attitude, not mentioning any names...
