Let it dry out. Water, if I understand this correctly, really only just makes connections where there shouldn't be connections which is what shorts out electronic devices. So you might have snapped something, overloaded it, but it didn't make that big dramatic spark thing like in a movie. Either way, let it dry itself out before attempting to turn it back on. Then start checking what doesn't work.

ummmm... i think the thing going off was probably a bad sign - something will have shorted even if it didn't do it spectacularly. having said that, if you leave it off for long enough for it to dry out it could work again.
i knocked a glass of water over onto my digital camera once while i was asleep. it wouldn't turn on, but i put it on some piled up towels over a warm radiator for a couple of days and it slowly regained functionality. the only thing is it's always slightly overexposed with the flash, although i can't remember if it was like that before the soaking.
i've spilt so many drinks over this laptop it's a wonder it's never shorted out. beer, tea, coffee, juice - all have found there way onto the keyboard or screen on many occaisions. and it still works, just.

The bad news is, to find it and replace it you have to know a fair amount about TVs and electronics. Which is why that guy is going to charge so much if you hire him to fix it...

Maybe it's my usual paranoia and excessive worry, but I know that CRT TVs have fuck-off high voltages inside them. I also don't know how long they hang around after the telly's turned off, but some niggling little thing's telling me it's a while.
Now whilst the TV will be fine if nothing's shorted or died, once it's dried out, in the meantime I'd be concerned that the water could leak in to the high-voltage bits, cause a spark and cause a fire. So move anything flammable from around/on/under the telly, and make sure there's a smoke detector near it and working. Just in case.
And leave it to dry out really thoroughly before plugging it in or turning it on. At least several days in a warm place.
Hopefully that's just paranoia. But paranoia's better than burning to death :)
Up for a protest if the plug is pulled?
I'm afraid the TV is most likely on its way to whatever afterlife it will experience in the garbage dump.

First of all, if you spilled water on electronics, turn them off immediately. If they "turn off" by themselves, chances are it's permanent.
To facilitate drying, I suggest to remove the cover, seek for water, wipe it. Leave to dry w/o cover. And, no, it isn't as dangerous as it seems.

I'm afraid the TV is most likely on its way to whatever afterlife it will experience in the garbage dump.
If God wanted it to be in a Garbage dump, he'd poof it there. The TV must be plugged in at all times. We mustn't lose hope. Don't you believe in miracles? What about what the TV would have wanted?

My old TV fried itself, I turned it on and it immediately shut off and I could smell burning metal. It was a sad day as it never worked again. If WYTYG's TV can have water dumped into its insides and it still works I might lose any remaining faith in the concept of "fairness". Her TV simply cannot work. So her TV must die, just as mine did. I'm sure her TV's will is strong but the universe must balance itself out with its death.
No. I'm always right.
Really? Then I shall withdraw and think how to weaken your fantastic power.

It can not be helped. The universe must balance. Or else I will have to simply believe I had a crappy TV that crapped out on me. What else can I do but demand the universe bring me justice? If you got caught up in my call... sorry.

I suppose we will simply have to wait and see. Perhaps the universe will take away some other poor soul's television. ;)

Q: Dear computer helpline
I was attending a LAN party the other day, when a friend of mine ate too much candy and succombed to motion sickness when watching me play World of Warcraft. This resulted in him throwing up into my computer, which was open since I was trying to install a new fan. My motherboard got the worst of it, so I took it out and poured some cold coffee on it to rinse off most of the puke. I then proceeded to place it in the tub, where I washed it with soap and warm water. I submerged it completely, so I'm sure I got all of it out, but my motherboard still won't work. What can I do? Please help!
A: Buy a new one

Um, yeah, so I just spilled a big glass of water all over the top of my TV. Lots of it went into the vent slits on top. :/
The TV was running. Up to that point. Now, not so much.
Nothing exploded or shorted or whatever, though, so that's a good sign, right? Right?!
I pulled the plug and am sitting here sadly. Anything else I can do or should know about?
Wait until it dries out and turn it back on. That's like a couple of days (put a fan on it or something). If you see sparks...run.
Seems bad luck is contagious. :(
That there wasn't 'bad luck'...
