Its a pretty bizarre story about trying to ban ethnic slurs, a ban for which there will be no actual punishment. Its a very mixed messege about what they are actually trying to acheive by this.

A large anvil with the words "First Ammendment" painted on it falls on the councillor in question

It had to be done.

I remember listening to this story (hooray for NPR!) and I seem to remember that it was a voluntary measure...but I could be wrong.

I do also remember an argument that a ban on the words would just lend more importance to the words, and therefore prolong their use...or something...

*is unfortunately not in a good place to listen to the interview again* :(

This liberal wacko would probably vote for Hillary Clinton! He needs to step boldly forward into the 18th century and accept the fact that we have freedom of speech.

Resolution. Not ban. Like Philadelphia, resolving that being the fattest city in the US, Philadelphians should jog their fat asses up and down the self-same steps Rocky did. No one stood with a whip, forcing said fat asses to do it.

As for purpose? It's self-evident. "Hey guys, let's just stop saying ******, okay? Can we do that, please?"

I'm rather of a different opinion. Let those who wish to utter such hateful word do so, in order that we may know them. Such utterances are the blood in the water of your shark pool in my sig quoted of your post. Let loose the sharks of free thought and not the turtles of overly sheltered society that allow the rot to set in.

Not everyone must be resolved to stop using the word, my ridiculously loquacious one. Let fools natter away with their racial epithets in order to mark them? Interesting...I prefer mechanical attachments to their jackets that administer a bitch slap every time such a word is uttered...

Thanks! Love the new name.

Wasn't really gone, though. Just ran out of things to talk about. Some life movements here and there, so I took a bit of a hiatus from this life consuming forum. ;)

More simply, let the bastards say whatever the hell they want. That way we know who the evil ones are, and can deal with them. Ban words and you push thye ideas into secret places where it's harder to deal with them appropriately. Set words free and it's easier to know who the evil ones are.

And the reverse is also true. Setting the presidence of banning any words sets the precidence of banning, well, any words. Today it's ******, tomorrow it's blond and brunette, next week it's Democrat and Republican, Tory and Whig. Where does it stop?

Thing is though that legislation would have to (by principle of equality) include those people to whom the N word applies. Who, incidentally, often refer to each other using said word in almost every sentence.

Besides one of the fun things about words is that meanings change, you ban one slur and another one will crop up in it's place. For example the word "noob" or "n00b" if you prefer. It's original meaning stems from "Newbie" meaning someone who is new. However it is often used AS a slur in the context of "idiot", "asshole" or even stronger insults and as such has taken on much of the meaning of those insults and by so doing has become just as insulting as the words it euphamises (real word?).

Hmm rather long and not very well constructed last sentence there but I think the meaning is clear. :D

PC gone wrong. Next thing you know, they will want to ban unaccepable thoughts. Some people will just not be satisfied until we all act and think just exactly as they think we shoud. Funny that "how we shoud act/think/speak" is exactly how they act/think/speak.

I think "******" is a cool sounding word. I also like the word "jigger". It is funny but "trigger" doesn't really do anything for me. Neither does "Tigger" of Winne the Pooh fame. Although don't get wrong, I am all about Tigger.

Indeed. Even worse, they expect everyone to think ideas that haven't gone through Neesika's "shark pool".

(I hope you don't mind my having seized upon that wording Neesika. It really conveys well something I've been meaning to sig for a long time.)

You must have missed it the first time. A resolution is not a law. Stop whining.

This has been a public service announcement.

Explain to me, how an intelligent human being, trying to pass a resolution which is inherently non-compulsive, actually intends to ban anything?

If, inherent in a resolution, is the inability to ban anything, then your perception of this is still wrong.

So go back, edit what you wrote, and then make this statement again.

No one gives a shit what people 'want' to do, if they have absolutely no power to do it.

A powerless resolution is a good indication that, given the chance or the power to do so, this person would be very likely to attempt to actually ban the word and ultimately the thought behind it. That is not to say that the outright banning of anything ever really works, especially when you are attempting to ban, or in this case, indicating their desire to ban, speech/thought.
