To those who said the new democrat controlled congress wouldn't try pushing any anti-gun measures, here ya' go:
http://www.govtrack.us/congress/bill.xpd?bill=h110-1022
To reauthorize the assault weapons ban, and for other purposes
Let's see if the new members stick to their guns (pun intended) or cave to the DNC old guard.

Due to bullshit tactics where bills are never actually about what there are supposed to be, it will get pumped full of bullshit worse than a gun ban and die in committee. Or the Republicans will try to stick in a Democrat platform idea then kill the bill and blame the Democrats for hating children or something.
They want to take away guns???? This is obviously a plot by the Dems to help terrorists take over America! Who will stop OBL from taking the White House in '08, now that my precious .50 caliber heavy machine gun might be banned again. Dang!

I don't get it. Are they trying to ban assault weapons? If so, why is that a bad thing?
Although the OP wins the thread for their excellent choice of title. I was just listening to that one. :p

Assault weapons isn't an actual category. It's just a name given to a bunch of wildly disparate firearms with little in common. It's just stupid. I think the name was picked to sound like "assault rifles" which is an actual category.
Full auto weapons have been banned since the thirties, IIRC. So you can't have machine guns or assault rifles with full auto capacity.
Edit: Ah, full-auto weapons are heavily regulated since 1934. Importation was banned in 1968. 1986 saw the ban of manufacture of new machine guns for civilians. Seriously, this is pretty heavy regulation. Taxes on manufacture, even if you do it yourself, taxes on transfer across state lines, permission from the ATF and local authorities, full background check, full registration, and the firearm can never be handled or transfered by any private individual unless the registered owner is present. And that's just from the 1934 law.

"Assault Weapons" are just semi-auto rifles or pistols that look like military weapons. Some of the laws are so stupid that an old Marlin 60 is classified as an "assault weapon" in NJ.

Because the ban doesn't apply to assault weapons, which you need a special license to own anyway. It applies to most semi-automatic rifles. Rifles used in almost no crimes, but rather used legally to shoot vermin that harm farmer's crops and animals and that are used legally to plink targets and to display in collections. It's a stupid law that does little more than infringe on people's rights.

That's one of the few things that suck about NJ. Thanks to former (and widely hated) governor Jim Florio we have some of the stupidest and strictest gun laws in the US.

And a few of the more enterprising of us will catch it in a grail of sorts, and use it for all the right purposes ... like lining entrance ways/windows, mixing with milk and mandrake root and placing under certain posters' beds, and perhaps even as an intimate lubricant.

Seriously, all the assault weapons (at already pointed out, actually a misnomer) ban does is ban certain firearms and prevents semi-auto weapons from having certain features. Features that don't increase the damage the bullets do. Connecticut has a near mirror of the federal AWB (with the exception that we can own high cap mags), and it does nothing to reduce crime. Here is a link to the CT version: http://www.cga.ct.gov/2005/pub/Chap943.htm#Sec53-202a.htm
Here's a good (IMO) page to read for more info: http://www.saysuncle.com/archives/2004/03/23/assault-weapons-ban-primer-reprint/
ETA: A possible solution I have to reduce crime, without wasting the time of making/re-introducing a law that won't acomplish a lot, it to A: enforce the laws we already have, B: tougher sentences for firearms crimes, and C: Give state and federal funding to the agencies and departments that need it (like CT's stolen firearms task force and CT's firearms trafficking unit).
