But why do so many of the Americans here seem to hate Hilary Clinton? I just had a look at the thread that had a link to a picture of her with Redefeat Communism on it. Looking at it from over here, where both of the main US parties seem equivalent to, or on the right of, our Conservative party this seems faintly ridiculous. And I saw the Top Gear episode where a painted slogan "Hilary for President 08" on a car caused hurled rocks in Alabama. But anyway.
I know next to nothing about politics before 1997 when I started taking an interest. So why does Hilary seem to bring out so much anger? What has she done? I'm really intrigued.

To be honest, I think the people who hate her the most know the least about her. For some reason most of my conservative friends back in the States are convinced that she's a raging communist, but when I ask why they think that they say "because she is". I'm not really a fan (I like Richardson more) but I don't really understand the raging hatred for her either.

I don't like that.
I want to write what I want, read what I want, play the video games that I want, and raise my children without her "village".

The problem is, Smunkee, that none of these are examples of reasons why you hate her. They are reasons why you don't support her, and why you disagree with her, and why you may think she's a doof on several issues, but I have seen nothing from you that indicates you hate her.
You appear to feel pretty much the same way I do. I don't agree with her, I don't want her for my representative or president, and I think she's bought in far too much for my taste. But I don't hate the woman. She's done nothing to deserve hatred, in my opinion.
The hatred that Hilary Clinton inspires has, in my opinion, precious little to do with her actual actions as a politician. It's more about what she represents, and what she is associated with.

I don't hate her, but I think she's unelectable since most folks see her as an elitist out of touch with the common folks and some buy into the hype that she's some kind of ultra leftist (yeah, it's stupid, but that's the image portrayed by the "liberal" media).

Middle America isn't the real America. The real America is on the coasts. Separation of church and state is a solid American value.
What exactly is it that makes americans not like her policies?
Is it just where people are generally anti Democrat, or is it more specific to her?
But why do so many of the Americans here seem to hate Hilary Clinton?
I don't hate her, but I won't vote for her...for two reasons.
1. The constitution says presidents are limited to two terms, and she's already had hers. :p
2. Seriously...we'll have had a Bush or a Clinton in office for 20 years when W finally rides into the sunset...let's knock this shit off, or do you want to see President Bush Twin in 20 years??

It's more specific to her. There was a major smear campaign during the Clinton years aimed at her husband and at her.

Well, it's for 2000, but:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demographics_of_the_United_States
According to the map on that page, most of the population is concentrated in the eastern United States, mostly closer to the coast than anything else, though a bunch in the south to be sure. There's also the large amount of population in California. Other than that...middle America is pretty barren population wise, compared to the other areas.

Interesting....
I think there is a issue with terminology though...I always associated 'the coasts' with states on the coast like...and everything else as mid west (sort of from Illinois to Nevada...
Still even then the demographics are skewed towards the coasts...I had always thought the interior of the US had the highest populations...
Cheers for the info!

That could be. I always thought of middle America as the folks in the "heartland" where some folks think the "real" Americans live. Anyway, my post was mainly a reaction to having heard on seveal occasions that the folks in the middle of the country are the real Americans and us Northeasterners and the West coast people are latte-drinking ivory tower elitists who don't fit in. Not exactly accurate, Clinton loving is not that popular in Britian. Half the people don't give a toss and the rest think she is better than Bush. I think the general consensus is "thank god he (Bush) can't go for another term!".
Who gets in is only a small detail.

You should hear all the excitement of Clinton going to the Labour Party's conferance which happens practically every year. Clinton is popular over here in the U.K. because the Americans elected such a bad president as his replacement. Compared to Bush, anybody can be made into a popular ex-president (cept maybe Nixon and Reagan).

Yeah I was sort of on about that...the only reason people in the U.K. want to see her president is because of the popularity for Bill. Otherwise they wouldn't care less.

The hate has to do with the fact that she's a woman, which I will never understand. As a person I actually like her. She's neat. I just really do not agree with most of her positions which is why I don't support her.
She's one of the more obvious examples of political opportunism, I think. It seems like she has no real beliefs of her own (despite being called a "liberal"), and bases all her actions and opinions on what is politically convenient at the time.
Examples, off the top of my head:
* Her waffling over the war in Iraq
* She supports a ban on flag-burning
* She is against gay marriage
* She went after violent video games, for God's sake
* She has a cold, manipulative air about her, generally

I hate her because I think her primary reason for running is just so she can be the first female president. She could at least try to hide it a bit better.
She voted to loosen the restrictions on cell-phone wire tapping.
She thinks it's okay to sue the gun manufacturer for wrongful death and violence. She's pro-gun control.
She voted yes on the Patriot Act.
She voted yes on allowing illegal immigrant to participate in social security.... When there's not enough money for the retired people to live on.
Also, I don't think I could take 4 years of her claxon-like voice.

She also used to recruit people from my old school to be interns at her office, and many of them came back with less than stellar opinions. *shrug*
And completely baseless, but I dislike to see her speak, I don't feel like I can trust anything she's saying. Although I feel that way about the majority of politicians I've seen speak.
