Evidently uber liberal comedian, and host of Air America on the radio, Al Franken says that he will be running for the US senate in Minnesota (http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/n/a/2007/02/14/national/a133731S90.DTL&type=politics)

What do you think? Does he have a chance? Would he be a good public servant? How long before Fox News starts tearing him and the democratic party apart on being too liberal? Oh wait..they already do that...But, i do find it interesting that he would run for office.

Awww, what's wrong with having a comedian for a senator? :(

He's cool. :D

Couldn't be any worse than having a wrestler or actor for governor.

If I lived in Minnesota, I'd vote for him. :D

He's been talking about doing so for a while, I believe.

I think he actually does have a pretty decent chance - whatever one thinks of Franken, it's hard to deny that he's a smart guy who tends to know what he's talking about.

He moved to Minnesota, despite running a radio show that was based in New York, specifically for his upcoming Senate run. This is fairly old news.

He's hardly uber liberal. He only has good things to say about McCain, despite McCain being pretty far right. Not far right wing-nut, but far right. He gave Lieberman every chance to seem like a decent human being. He's a big fan of Clinton, who is a centrist, but most liberals think that Clinton was too conservative. As many of us put it, "he was the best Republican president of the 20th century." It's a joke of course, that would be Roosevelt. But the point stands.

The only thing Uber about Franken is his political/celebrity crossover status. His liberalism is relatively tepid.

Meh. Jon Stewart > Franken

Of course, Stewart isn't running for office. I'd vote for him if he would, but he isn't.

I'd like to see Stephen Colbert run a strictly write-in campaing for some political office too. Not actively campaign, just explain how to write in for a candidate and tell the camera that he is not going to run.

Yes. Why did you break the page?

To show my dominance over it.

I havent the money(nor likely the patience) to get his books, and I've never heard Air America (Why does that name remind me of "Lethal Weapon"...?) So can anyone summarize his main views for me or forward me to his campaign site?

If I remember correctly, Franken thinks of himself as being pretty moderate. It's mostly just evidence that our country is weird that Franken ends up looking "far left."

Bush is a flip flopper. His only basis for this belief is Bush's numerous flip-flops.

The war in Afghanistan was a war that needed to be fought. He was for Iraq because he wanted to trust his president. He now sees that his trust was misplaced. He holds a "donought hole" theory on social security tax(there should be an income level where you have a maximum level of social security, but if you make enough you should start paying it again). He believes that the capital gains tax structure should be as progressive as the wage-earning one, and that there should be parity between the two. Also, right-wingers lie constantly, all you have to do is listen to any random thing they say, look into it yourself and you will see that it was either untrue or misleading. But if I'm going to include that, I should say that he also believes that the sky is blue (of course as a Democrat he would think that.)

You can hear air america at airamericaradio.com/listen (http://www.airamericaradio.com/listen)

And his books are probably available for free at the library. I've never paid money for a political punditry book either, but Franken's are funny enough to read. I recomend Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them. It's funnier than "the truth with jokes," and more up to date than "Rush Limbaugh is a big fat idiot."
