a tornado hits New Orleans and tears a bunch of stuff up......it seems that they just can't get ahead of the cleanup down there.

:(

Some 30,000 homes were without power, as a state of emergency was declared.

I actually heard that statement after katrina hit...I was at a forum type thing for school, and they were discussing it, and some black chick stood up and said "God punished them because they were going to allow a homosexual parade in the city"

What a croc of BS

Wow. Kinda puts things into perspective. Seriously, can't the natural disasters just lay off for a while? What's next, a tsunami?

This must be an evil plot by some 40-something mad scientist who hates Mardi Gras because he never got any whenever he celebrated it. Think about it. I tell you, that's the next James Bond movie.

Yes over here in Ireland I've heard some saying similar things, such as "God unleashes natural disasters on the USA to punish them for the Iraq war."

I wonder what the people of Indonesia did that was so bad!?

Yeah, think about it, China gets hit by earthquakes fairly often, all the Asian island countires (Japan, Indonesia, etc) get tsunamis from time to time, all the Central American countries get landslides, and most other countries certainly don't have perfect weather 100% of the time, but just becaus ethe USA gets the most hurricanes and tornadoes, it must be because some imaginary dictator up in the clouds is mad at us for gays/Iraq/global warming/Clinton getting freaky with an intern...

New Orleans is 6 feet below sea level, and near the Gulf of Mexico. If you live there, you gotta be prepared for hurricanes and floods and tornadoes and crap like that. :(

Yes, never mind that the US is in such a position on the freaking planet where it would get slammed by hurricanes and tornadoes frequently.

Tidal wave =/= tsunami.

Tsunamis are tidal waves caused by earthquakes. Tidal waves can be caused by large masses falling into the water.

So if half of Mississippi collapses in the Gulf, it wouldn't be a tsunami.

Plague, since a fire doesn't seem to likely. :(

Though I hope that doesn't happen :(

err... nope (http://www.tsunami.noaa.gov/).

A tsunami is a series of ocean waves generated by sudden displacements in the sea floor, landslides, or volcanic activity. In the deep ocean, the tsunami wave may only be a few inches high. The tsunami wave may come gently ashore or may increase in height to become a fast moving wall of turbulent water several meters high.

so any large mass falling into the ocean, like a large landslide, earthquake or volcanic eruption in Mexico, on the shores of the Gulf can produce the same effect.

and here (http://www.crystalinks.com/tsunami.html).
Tsunamis have been historically referred to as tidal waves because as they approach land they take on the characteristics of a violent onrushing tide

Tidal waves were used because it was under the misconception that the Tides caused such waves, Tsunami became the standard word used, but Tidal wave is still understood to being the same thing, since it was historically used before the nature of such destructive waves were understood.

So, what would an incoming meteor/asteroid (one that's quite large enough) cause, a tsunami, or a tidal wave?

I'm pretty sure it would, although I have a feeling that tsunamis are the last thing you'll have to worry about.

Tidal wave =/= tsunami.

Tsunamis are tidal waves caused by earthquakes. Tidal waves can be caused by large masses falling into the water.

So if half of Mississippi collapses in the Gulf, it wouldn't be a tsunami.

I believe southeastern Mexico and Central America get earthquakes now and then.

That would make a Tsunami possible, if implausible, wouldn't it?

Ah, and these tornados are just more evidence to support a popular theory;
Trailers are tornado magnets.

FEMA fucked up big time placing their evacuees in trailers. They were practically begging for a tornado to come that way.

We had an earthquake in Oklahoma Monday. Little one, but small ones happen here frequently.

And Darknovae, ever heard of the New Madrid quake?

The New Madrid Earthquake, the largest earthquake ever recorded in the contiguous United States, occurred on February 7, 1812. (The largest recorded earthquake in the entire United States was the Alaskan Good Friday Earthquake on March 27, 1964.) It derived its name from its primary location in the New Madrid Seismic Zone, near New Madrid, Louisiana Territory (now Missouri). This earthquake was preceded by three other major quakes: two on December 16, 1811, and one on January 23, 1812. These earthquakes destroyed approximately half the town of New Madrid. There were also numerous aftershocks in the area for the rest of that winter. There are estimates that the earthquakes were felt strongly over 50,000 square miles, and moderately across nearly one million square miles. The historic San Francisco earthquake of 1906, by comparison, was felt moderately over 60,000 square miles.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Madrid_earthquake

Just because large earthquakes aren't common in this area doesn't mean it couldn't happen.
