I tolerate elderly drivers....but only because there is no way to counter their political influence via the AARP and revoke their licenses.

depends what you mean by tolerate. i tolerate everyone and everything in that i don't shout at them and generally put up with unpleasantness. but then i tend to try to maintain a distance from people who smell really bad. and i don't engage in conversation with people who annoy me.

I have a client, who did not pay their fee to me 2005, so I wrote them a letter every quarter explaining that they need to pay the bill. I sent them a bill every month, as I do everyone who has an outstanding balance. They called me yesterday and left a message (I was out) that they wanted me to do their taxes this year, I called them back and said that they were no longer clients of mine and that I would be happy to recommend another person who can do their taxes.

They said "if you want your money you have to do our taxes", and I explained to them that they owe me the money whether I do their taxes or not, and that as per my policy (that they signed) I will send any outstanding balances from 2005 to collections after the first quarter of 2007. They said that they would pay the bill in full out of their refund if I do their taxes. I explained again, that I am no longer interested in having anything to do with them, and that I would recommend someone who could do their taxes.

and they hung up.

Then they called back and asked about setting up a payment plan, and I said that if they wanted to, I would meet with them and they could sign a payment plan and that as long as they had the bill paid by the end of the quarter it would not go to collections. They then threatened me again, so I called the police.

I do this because people are assholes and it's easier to trap them in their lies when I have it recorded.

I find that just the threat of 'you will be hearing from my solicitors' enough of a threat to get paid...

Then again I don't usually have problems with non payment.

I assume you are a one person company like me...people don't realise how a non payment can really affect your business.

Still there is no excuse for these people to behave like that.

I am a one person business. What makes it worse, is because of the nature of my business I know who can pay and who can't. They can pay, they just don't want to. I have been trying to set up a payment plan with them for a year, if they paid just a little every month, they would have paid me off long ago.

Its funny...it seems that the richer people are the less they want to pay for services.

I know not all are like that but enough for this kind of crap to be noticeable.

The really annoying thing is that one cannot talk about it to others in the community as confidentiality is so important...in your and my lines of work.

I've been called some nasty things by members of the public I was actually trying to help (or at least, like in your situation, remaining civil) as well, so take heart in the fact that these people are probably pricks to everyone rather than singling you out. Don't let 'em bother you. :)

Yeah. I admit I have ranted when dealing with customer services...but not at the actual agent...never...having been there myself. I do rant at the systems that the agents have to deal with. The hoops these systems or procedures make you go through are insane...
