Holdays you hate

Well, the question is simple. What are some holdays you think just plain suck? I nominate Easter. It's not worth celebrating at all, as it celebrates an "event" which I consider to be impossible, and I don't much like the way it is clebrated either. As a result, I don't observe it at all.

Well the Holidays that I hate is Valentines Day. God it's such a worthless Hallmark Holiday that it's not worth it.

Eh...Easter is rather boring, I admit. It also brings up the whole "Why don't you worship Jesus?" annual debate in my family.

Thanksgiving is my least favorite. The whole point of it is to get fat eating bland food. Give me pasta or steak or lobster, hell even pizza or burgers, over turkey and stuffing anyday.

yeh, i'll second that for easter. the only good bit is the chocolate, but that comes at the cost of feeling ill and getting lots of headaches. the worst bit is the marzipan, why is there always so much marzipan at easter? surely you can decorate a simnel cake with something other than marzipan? honestly, it's like a christmas cake with no icing to save it from being disgusting, bleurgh! i hate that stuff, and then i have to endure every single person asking me why i don't like marzipan. and who ever knows when easter is? i can't keep track of it. why won't people make up their minds? i bet it's just so i can't plan to be out of the country in advance when everyone's trying to stuff marzipan down my throat. actually, there is one other saving grace - bunny ears, i have some pink fluffy flashing ones (see my pic in teh player info thread), and sometimes you see otherwise perfectly modest girls wearing playboy bunny outfits. thank fuck someone decided all the religious imagery was boring and introduced rabbits to the game i say.

why do we have to hate holidays? I like all holidays. In fact, I wish there were more of them.

P.S. = Steel Butterfly, you are right on about Thanksgiving though

That's why we don't usually have turkey...

Valentines day.

If they are going to add fake holidays to the calendar can they at least add ones that center around drinking?

Yeah, but since love is the focal point of the holiday there's going to be alot of sad souls at the bar whining that they're alone. So it's really a day to drink inside.

I was think more along the lines of St Patricks Day or El Cinco Del Drinko.

Columbus Day- celebrating the genocidal tendencies of a lost sailor since 1492!

I still think any holiday worth a day off is good no matter what it celebrates

True.

Oh, okay, the good drinking days. I'm with you on that one.

Why not make July 25th a holiday? It's already the focal point of Christmas in July, so we could just make it an excuse to get a day off and get hammered at high summer. Unfortunately, that's not possible for Australians, but they've got it good enough as is with Christmas in the summer.

Easter is my favorite holiday....

My two least favourite holidays: Poland's equivalent to an independence day, and Swilatia's Birthday. Both of which are just stupid days and celebrate nothing significant at all.

Also, secretaries day, boss's day and all those hallmark made up days.

I like it. Usually, it's the start of spring so the warmer weather and new growth fit well with the religious themes of Easter. I'm not Christian but I do respect and revere the meaning of the holiday.

Hey! I'm Polish too...their history is something worth celebrating. They refused to bend over and take it from the Germans and Soviets, unlike some countries (France).

Secondly, Easter ain't Christian. Its a Christian appropriation from Mithraism.

Valentines day the way I see it no longer celebrates true love, it celebrates fornication and getting the other person in bed through bribery and gift giving. It celebrates fornication and it reminds those who were victimized by broken relationships, break ups about how painful it is to get screwed over by you "lover". And its the most painful day of the year if you consider all those who sulk during that day because they see couples while their relationship went to hell and back.

When I was at work, I disliked any holiday that I didn't get off. Now that I'm retired, I dislike any holiday that lets school out - then the kids are everywhere, making noise and being disruptive. Fortunately, I live in a place where the kids are a pretty decent group, noisy, but not destructive or disrespectful, if I ask them to quiet down, they do.

Umm..., that weird bit of humor is awesome!

Anyways, I believe that holidays make people praise things more, and that without them, we wouldn't have as much praise for things. Why hasn't our president made a holiday for him and the Iraq war yet? He needs more praise in those two areas...

*Just be glad that politics hasn't gotten into holidays (as in which they use holidays to spread their views and that's what you think of first instead of something else)

Valentine's Day and St. Patrick's Day. If you don't have the day off on a holiday, the holiday sucks.

Valentine's Day can be rough for those not in a relationship... and pretty much everyone in NYC is "Irish for the Day" on St. Patrick's Day.

This of course entails wearing green and drinking beer.
And sometimes, in college, drinking (ugh!) green beer.

Chanukah is more of a celebration of defeating the Greeks. They just teach little kids in Sunday School it is about the oil burning for 8 days because Sunday School teachers like teaching rosy history instead of how Judah Maccabee and his men defeated the Greeks. That is an event which history confirms occurred.

valentine's day probably, i don't even know why it's celebrated. i mean, christmas and easter etc all have some kind of legend that 'explains' why there is a holiday, something valentine doesn't have. and we don't get a day of from work on valentine's day.

i think the stressfulness of expectiations associated with all holydays "sucks".

there is nothing intrinsic to any particular one of them that does so more then that though.

and probably if it wasn't for economic exploitation of them many would be far more welcome then they are.

generosity yes. to the needy not the greedy. i.e. to anyone who wants what the're not likely to forsee themselves comming by on thier own, but not to the exploitiveness of the bussiness of bussiness.

to everyone who'se perspectives i like or merely tolerate. rather then to ware it will further be used to degrade and destroy the kind of world we all could and would be happier, safer and more universaly gratified living in.
