Flanders and Swann

Right, who here has heard of Michael Flanders and Donald Swann, two of the greatest men to ever walk the Earth?
No reason why I'm asking other than I'm curious.

I've been a fan of theirs for a few years now and I'm just so annoyed that I'll never get to see them in life; I mean, Donald Swann died in 1996 (I think) and Michael Flanders even earlier.

Oh well... I'll just cheer myself up by listening to The Gas Man Cometh; it was always one of my favourites.
"Oh, it all makes work for the working man to do..."

Love 'em. I had an album of their animal songs as a kid. The Hippopotamus was my favorite, of course, but Gnu was right up there.

M'Diera, M'dear is also one of the best songs I've ever heard. The verse structure is one that I haven't heard anywhere else, and the music is charming.

I also love listening to Flanders' spiel about airports, which was recorded during a concert they gave.

The Song of Patriotic Prejudice is a masterpiece.

The English, the English, the English are best
I wouldn't give tuppence for all of the rest.

The rottenest bits of these islands of ours
We've left in the hands of three unfriendly powers
Examine the Irishman, Welshman or Scot
You'll find he's a stinker, as likely as not.

The Scotsman is mean, as we're all well aware
And bony and blotchy and covered with hair
He eats salty porridge, he works all the day
And he hasn't got bishops to show him the way!

The English, the English, the English are best
I wouldn't give tuppence for all of the rest.

The Irishman now our contempt is beneath
He sleeps in his boots and he lies through his teeth
He blows up policemen, or so I have heard
And blames it on Cromwell and William the Third!

The English are noble, the English are nice,
And worth any other at double the price

The Welshman's dishonest and cheats when he can
And little and dark, more like monkey than man
He works underground with a lamp in his hat
And he sings far too loud, far too often, and flat!

And crossing the Channel, one cannot say much
Of French and the Spanish, the Danish or Dutch
The Germans are German, the Russians are red,
And the Greeks and Italians eat garlic in bed!

The English are moral, the English are good
And clever and modest and misunderstood.

And all the world over, each nation's the same
They've simply no notion of playing the game
They argue with umpires, they cheer when they've won
And they practise beforehand which ruins the fun!

The English, the English, the English are best
So up with the English and down with the rest.

It's not that they're wicked or naturally bad
It's knowing they're foreign that makes them so mad!

For the English are all that a nation should be,
And the flower of the English are Donald (Michael)
Donald (Michael) and Me!

Fantastic. I loved their animal songs when I was growing up, and "Have Some Madeira M'Dear" is great. Haven't listened to any of their stuff in ages though, I'll have to go hunt it down now. :)

That reminds me: ignore the other topic/s (no idea how many there may be) about the same thing by me; they can be deleted and, indeed, I hope they are. They were just as a result of clicking the submit thread button too many times.

A Song of Patriotic Prejudice... Classic. I think I'll submit it as official Party song for the NBCyIPsW party...

I was fortunate enough to acquire all three main albums: At the Drop of a Hat, At the Drop of Another Hat and even The Bestiary of Flanders and Swann. They're so rare nowadays though...

The PBS video of them performing in the US is highly entertaining, too. A friend of mine came across it a few years ago.

That monologue about airports was called 'By Air' and it preceded 'Slow Train'. :D
That was one of his greatest monologues I always think, although I hold a special place in my heart for 'Built-Up Area'.
