The movie Dune and the War in Iraq.

Dune: Theres a planet (Iraqus) with a substance called "spice" in which a futuristic human race needs to maintain economical balance. Without it "civilization would fall" due to the amount of self interest that all the leaders have stated by Paul Atraties father. The other name for the planet sounds like Iraq but with the 'ous' at the end removed. The Harkenon stop spice shipments with military force thus forcing the emperor to send the Atraties to deal with it.
Iraq: Has most of the oil in the world in which modern man needs to maintain the economy due to our dependence on oil. Without it we are back in the stone ages unless alternate fuels are found. War starts, prices soar.
LOL I know its a longshot but the few similarities make me chuckle. :p

There was a book before there was a movie. And the idea of people fighting over natural resources really isn't all that unusual.

I guess if the planet is called Iraqus then it's a weird similarity. Otherwise...it wouldn't be too unusual.
Problem was, I thought the Fremen were a bunch of backward scum that deserved to be wiped out, unlike the Iraqis. And I thought the spice must flow and was an ardent supporter of Shaddam IV.
I also supported the Trade Federation during the occupation of Naboo.

No, in the book/movie the freemen were patriots who wanted to rule their own land justly. The insurgents in Iraq commit war crimes against their own people. Plus the name Iraqus and the nation Iraq sound similar, and both are desert areas.

Amusingly enough, the Emperor of the first Dune book was named Shaddam IV.
Also, a sort of Neo-Islam/Neo-Christianity played a significant role in the book, in the form of the Fremen and the Bene Gesserit Sisterhood, respectively.
Dune(the book) is awesome, one the best Sci-Fi novels ever imo.
And spice could very easily be compared to oil, Spice was an essential resource to transport goods and people throughout the galaxy. The planets in Dune are very far away, ships traveling between them use an engine called a Holtzmann drive, which folds space at a quantum level. Trouble is, you need someone who can navigate through this quantum sprint and it is impossible for any human to have reactions quick enough to suffice, navigators need to be prescient which requires Spice.
[/Nerdiness]
BTW: its Arrakis, from the arabic Ar-rakis which means "the dancer"

How are the Bene Gesserit neo-christian? Only thing closely similar would be comparing the Kwisatz Haderach to Jesus, but other than that...

You know come to think of it I do seem to remember a quote of a muslim cleric saying something like "Long live the fighters" in regards to Jihadists so maybe there is something to it. I wonder then who the giant worm God-Emperor would be?

Actually, it was a mix of all religions, which used the Orange Catholic Bible and went by the name of Galactophasic Determinism.
Which is odd, considering I've never read any of the books... :p

Feyd's death in the movie was still better than his death in the miniseries. It was Sting's best role, except maybe J.D. in Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels.
I know the movie doesn't really compare to the book, but, on its own, the movie was freakin' awesome.

The ones in the new version of the movie look more realistic with the armored plates and all.

If Iraq was Dune; then Saddam would probably be the Baron Harkonen. GWB would be the "voice from the outer world" the liberator who becomes a religious tyrant.
Dune was actually based on two Middle-eastern pieces of history, the first is Mohammad's exile and return to Mecca, the second was the tale of Lawrence of Arabia, the voice from the outer world who would bring "liberation" from foreign rule.

It is, you can upgrade it to have a nuclear engine reactor, after that it goes faster and damages all units nearby when it dies. IT is powerful before the nuke upgrade, afterwards the cannon shells leave radiation behind after detonation.

 How dare you support those scumbags that took on my lovely queen, natalie portman. You will burn in the pits of Mustafar for that!

I probably would've been cut down by Anakin if I were there anyways...
In the SW Universe I would have been a proud (and quite wealthy) Neimoidian financial advisor and assistant to Viceroy Gunray and Settlement Officen Haako. Cowardice, efficiency, and greed are my hallmarks...and I do enjoy a mechno-chair as much as anyone else. The Neimoidians had the right idea with that one.
I have to admit, the Theed Royal Palace would have made a nice residence for myself and my staff. I would've been smart and kept droidekas in the room with me rather than outside, though.
