So... I'm getting a haircut tomorrow, and I have some questions on styling. What exactly is a 'layered' hairstyle?

I'm aiming for one of these two styles:

My hair is roughly neck-length, fairly straight and can reach my chin if I pull it down (I have a somewhat long face, so that is longish :)).

layered means that you have 2 or more distinct lengths in your hair.

the smaller picture is more feathered than layered.

take the picture you like best in with you. the hairdresser should be able to cut it to something like what is in the pic and show you how to get your hair to look like that with styling tips and products.

I think I might go for the smaller pic. Thanks for the info by the way - most people I know tend to be quite useless when it comes to hair advice. :p

It is now. I've grown it quite a bit (like I said, I can pull it down all the way to my chin).

They both look doofy.

You should just go for the Bernard Black hairstyle like me. It is incredibly easy to get and maintain.

I don't know, but I think those look weird. I always get my head shaved and never let it grow out too much.

Those two pictures are kind of scary.

I would recommend getting your hair cut shorter, such as one or two inches long. Doing this every so often lets you get rid of old damaged hair and makes a person's hair look healthier overall.

Same here. My beard's not been trimmed for a year and a half, however, and now reaches just past my collarbone.

If your hair is only as long as what is in your pics you gave, you can't get a hair do looking like the hair style pics you linked. Let it grow some more .. or cut yours shorter and make it spiky funky all over your head.

layering will always be around.. depending on the texture and thickness of the hair, face shape and skull shape.. always. Layers can be gooood.

I'm not sure but it as been around before Joe Dirt but probably not around as long as the Aztecs, they had some wicked mullets, now the fashion is to call them 'mu-lays', Crazy frenchification of Bogan culture.

Well the hairdresser chick cut my hair sort of like that - I can reshape it to the second pic in the OP if I like, but I like this style better. :) The bloody problem with my hair is that it's too volumeless! For the second style, I'd have to fluff it up somehow and add some volume.

Well, I'm 6ft1, and 150 lbs... so yeah, a regular Rosy O'Donnel. :) Nowhere near going bald (in fact, no men in my family have a history of it).

She gave me some sort of mild wax to rub in - she said I ought to wet my hair, comb it down, then apply the wax and blowdry it. Fairly simple. :)

Don't get it cut the way it was at the London meet. It looked a bit silly, like it was trying to be wild but was finding it difficult because it was too short.

I really can't tell if you're being sarcastic... anyway, my hair is always that voluminous... whenever I get a hair cut the first thing the hairdresser does is get out a pair of thinning scissors. My hair is very thick in two ways. The first is that there are a lot of hairs per cm2 on my scalp and the second is that the actual hair is very thick itself. The latter meaning tha if I sleep on it funny then it will develop a kink which will be nigh on impossible to comb down. My mum used to say I have dinosaur hair because she thought it made me look like a stegosaurus.

that thing i first recommended where you shave your head up to about the top of your ears or a bit farther and leave the top long. i see people with haircuts like that now and then and i think they look kinda cool.

*Wanted to get. I already got one. :p It does look a little on the emo side, but my apparel is more of the metalhead persuasion, so I don't look emo. ^^
