Wouldn't it be funny if Soviestan got like Roman Catholic or something?

About Secular Humanism:
• Belief in Deity
Not considered important. Most Humanists are atheists or agnostics.
• Incarnations
Same as above.
• Origin of Universe and Life
The scientific method is most respected as the means for revealing the mysteries of the origins of the universe and life.
• After Death
An afterlife or spiritual existence after death is not recognized.
• Why Evil?
No concept of “evil.” Reasons for wrongdoing are explored through scientific methods, e.g. through study of sociology, psychology, criminology.
• Salvation
No concept of afterlife or spiritual liberation or salvation. Realizing ones personal potential and working for the betterment of humanity through ethical consciousness and social works are considered paramount, but from a naturalistic rather than supernatural standpoint.
• Undeserved Suffering
No spiritual reasons but rather a matter of human vulnerability to misfortune, illness, and victimization.
• Contemporary Issues
The American Humanist Association endorses elective abortion. Other contemporary views include working for equality for homosexuals, gender equality, a secular approach to divorce and remarriage, working to end poverty, promoting peace and nonviolence, and environmental protection.

I am apparently 100% neo-Pagan. Whatever that means.
Actually reform Judaism sounds about right to me...
• Belief in Deity
Beliefs vary among adherents, including that of nonbelief or questioning belief, and all are welcome and considered personal, but the official stance is that there is one God Almighty--Creator, all-powerful, ever-present, and all knowing--formless, incorporeal spirit.
That about nails it for me, never understood how god was incorporeal for moses then suddenly changed. I also don't get the trinity thing...
• Incarnations
None, as only God is worshipped. Moses was the greatest of all prophets.
Again right on the button, except about the whole greatest prophet thing, why is one prophet better then another?
• Origin of Universe and Life
Most believe that Genesis is to be understood symbolically. God created and controls all phenomena revealed by modern science.
Yeah, don't like literal interpretation of religious texts, they're metaphorical and symbolic to me.
• After Death
Reform Jews believe in the world to come and a messianic age (but no individual Messiah). Personal beliefs in the details of afterlife are diverse, as there is no official position. Some believe in heaven and hell but only as states of consciousness; some believe in reincarnation; some believe God is all-forgiving; and some may not believe in an actual afterlife. Regardless, Judaism generally focuses on living a virtuous life, rather than working toward reward after death.
Seems like any idea about the afterlife is accepted. Agree with the last sentence completely.
• Why Evil?
No original sin. Most often, Satan is interpreted symbolically to represent selfish desires that are inherent within all. God gave people free will, and people are responsible for their actions.
Yup, which is why I like legalistic religions.
• Salvation
The main emphasis is on living the kind of life that God commands, which will surely be rewarded if there is an afterlife. Most believe God is forgiving of all; there is no hell to which some are condemned. Salvation is achieved through faith and prayer to God, good works, concern for the earth and humanity, and behavior that does no harm to others. The extent to which one follows Jewish Law is an individual decision.
Sounds about right.
• Undeserved Suffering
God gave humans free will to feel pleasure and pain, and his purpose in allowing deep suffering of the innocent must be good even if mysterious. It is generally believed that God suffers along with the sufferer. More important than knowing why God allows suffering is to work to help those in need.
This is confusing, how could suffering be good and why would god make someone suffer if he suffers along with them?
• Contemporary Issues
Judaism holds that human life begins upon first breath, and Jewish law requires abortion if necessary to save the mother's life prior to birth. Most believe potential human life should never be terminated casually, but it is generally regarded as a personal decision, especially within the first 40 days of pregnancy. Homosexuality: Homosexuals are God's creation, and Jewish instruction is to love our neighbors as ourselves. Reform (and Conservative) Judaism have a long history of support for homosexual rights.
95% Agreed.
Hang on, it lumps a belief that there is no god in with not being sure. Renders it useless as far as I can see.

Well, it could be telling you I'm a naked woman, which isn't true. I could be telling you that I'm attracted to women, which is true. It could be telling you that I'm a hormonal twenty-year old, which is true. So I guess it's trying to tell you something. Question is, what is trying to tell you?

Some of my greatest personal role-models within UUism were also atheists. They accept and tolerate and encourage all sorts of things. Provided they work for you, of course. And don't harm others. Unless they expressly ask to be harmed, that is...

Well, it could be telling you I'm a naked woman, which isn't true. I could be telling you that I'm attracted to women, which is true. It could be telling you that I'm a hormonal twenty-year old, which is true. So I guess it's trying to tell you something. Question is, what is trying to tell you?
Infinite Revolution: No, I'm making a joke. Aiyah...you'd think I've been around here long enough for people to tell when I'm joking...
The muffin man is trying to tell me. It seems the muffin man already knows that you're a hormonal twenty-year old, and is trying to tempt you further with pictures of naked women.

Some of my greatest personal role-models within UUism were also atheists. They accept and tolerate and encourage all sorts of things. Provided they work for you, of course. And don't harm others. Unless they expressly ask to be harmed, that is...

Really Unitarians seem to be "I just want something to do on sunday mornings."
Nothing wrong with that, but they seem to be the giant melting pot of religions.
Sure, there's lotsa Unitarians like that, too. They're usually afficianados of really good coffee.

I suppose they didn't have enough room left to put Satanism and other suchlike egoist philosophies on the list. I got humanist after all, and I detest the crap.

Monistic deism. I believe God and the supernatural are really parts of the physical universe, although they are comprised of properties and materials not yet understood. It is our duty to understand and explore the universe so as to find out more about ourselves and God, and to develop ourselves to our fullest potential.

Quite funny to see Roman Catholic right down at the bottom, since that's how I was brought up.
While it does seem accurate with the number one position, I don't quite understand how it got all three main branches of Christianity as the highest things on my list, closely followed by a church which many people of my kind often consider semi-heretical, and then immedietly followed by two branches which are almost always considered heretical by my type. At least UU was low on the list, glad I could inject some more diversity in this thread :D.

Interesting. I believe it is our function to understand God (and ourselves) by seeking meaning in direct experience of this continuum - and that off-the-shelf faith - faith with a capital 'F' - is a big cop-out, a singular admission of failure, an' like that.

I'm not a seventh day Adventist, but I listed the questions that might differentiate me from them as the lowest priority type of questions.
I don't think this test was designed to differentiate different types of Christians as well as it does differentiate between humanisms and pagan beliefs or Buddhist and Muslims beliefs, for example. But overall, not bad test, they should add another twenty questions for more specifics if you really want to narrow the fields down accurately though after the generalities.

I completely disagree. It goes into some specifics over Christian stuff, and doesn't differentiate at all between Sunni and Shiite muslim sects or between the myriad pagan beliefs.

Indeed. More than a third of the options (11 of 27) are variants on Christianity. And, as I obliquely pointed out above, it doesn't really cover the Buddhist variations well. Vajrayana should certainly be on there, and probably the Chan/Zen/Seon/Thien school, as well.

??? What's that?
UU is basically a liberal humanist amalgam. The roots go back to two early branches of Christian theology. Unitarianism rejects the trinity. Universalism believes in universal salvation. The immediate roots of UU in the US go back to the emergence of Universalism in the late 18th C. and a trinitarian/unitarian schism in the Congregationalist church in the late 19th C.
For more, see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unitarian_Universalism
Theravada Buddhism is the oldest school of Buddhism, and is also known as Southern, Pali, or Hinayana Buddhism. The other school listed, Mahayana, is a result of a schism.
The simplist way to explain the difference between Theravada and Mahayana is that Theravada seeks enlightenment on an individual basis whereas Mahayana seeks enlightenment on a wider basis. Also, Theravada is nontheistic, while can be considered Mahayana quasi-theistic - the Buddhas aren't gods, but close to it. Mahayana is also very syncritic, adapting to differing cultures and taking in new ideas, while Theravada isn't.
http://www.freewebs.com/haastexts/Mahayana%20and%20Theravada.htm
Vajrayana is the third major branch, and is a form of Mahayana. The easiest way to explain the difference bewteen mainstream Mahayana and Vajrayana is that they use different techniuques to achieve the same goal. Vajrayana applies certain techniques, known as tantra, to speed up the enlightenment process.
I mentioned above that Zen might be also be considered separately. This is due to subtle differences between doctrines within varieties of Mahayana, particularly the strong influance of Taoist thought. Zen is also of particular note for it's koan technique, which is the use of seemingly nonsensical and paradoxical "riddles" intended to essentially "short circut" logical thinking in order aid in understanding.

I was a bit surprised about my next three results scoring so high, but since reading this thread I guess it's a test bias that assigns those to anyone who doesn't believe in a God.
Also, the test is flawed -- there's nothing that allows us to claim human nature is inherently evil and thus 'suffering' is actually the natural state of things, for instance; but I think that's been covered already.

The top score on the list below represents the faith that Belief-O-Matic, in its less than infinite wisdom, thinks most closely matches your beliefs. However, even a score of 100% does not mean that your views are all shared by this faith, or vice versa.
Belief-O-Matic then lists another 26 faiths in order of how much they have in common with your professed beliefs. The higher a faith appears on this list, the more closely it aligns with your thinking.
How did the Belief-O-Matic do? Discuss your results on our message boards.

And I call biased sample.
Hey apparently I'm a Buddhist. Go figure. Though I'd never studied that branch of Buddhism, I have read up on Chan Buddhism (Zen Buddhism).

Bah, Satanism isn't on the list either. Neither is Deism. :(
As a remark, it's funny that this test lumps Catholicism with Protestantism. Either denomination has more in common with Orthodox Christianity - Catholicism because of the rituals, ornamentation and many of its core beliefs, and Protestantism because it in fact took a step away from Catholicism back to certain Orthodox beliefs.

Zen is a sect of Mahayana Buddhism.

As I said earlier. ;) It doesn't even mention Vajrayana. But I will say that at least it recognises thaere are Buddhist sects. The unitary nature it attributes Islam is simply disgraceful. Sunni, Shia, and Sufi ought to be on there, at a minimum.

Bold = RC
Green = Other Mainstream Xian
Red = Non-mainstream Xian
As you can see, RC isn't lumped in with the various other variations on Xianity.
The simplistic dividion of Buddhism into Mahayana and Thervada is the theological equivilant of lumping all Protestant (including highly variant strains like LDS) together and all orthodox strains together. Lumping Islam into one catagory is even worse.
Imagine if it had listed Theravada, Mahayana, Thien, Zen, Vajrayana, Shingon, Nichiren, Sunni, Shia, Sufi, and just simply Christianity.

Zen is a sect of Mahayana Buddhism.
And Unitarian Universalism, "Liberal Quakers", "Mainline to Liberal Christian Protestants", Christian Science, Orthodox Quaker, Seventh Day Adventist, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, "Mainline to Conservative Christian/Protestant", and Jehovah's Witness are all Protestant sects.
Why short shift the non-Xian sects? The Zen, Pure Land, Nicheren, and Shingon sects are at least as significantly different from standard Mahayana, as the Xian sects above are from mainstream Protestantism.
And yet again, simply lumping all of Islam together is a terrible disservice.

As usual, my beliefs are hard to get with this test. Partially because a lot of the questions/answer options were massive oversimplifications, and partially because I have unusual views. Ironically, people who are my #1 result, Mainline to Liberal Christian Protestants, would disagree with me substantially on so many issues that an open-minded one would rate me as 90% in agreement with them at best.
The Eastern Orthodox/Roman Catholic percentage is about right, as well as the percentages on numbers 5-10. The Buddhism ratings should be somewhat higher, the Secular Humanism rating is somewhat low, and Taoism is probably higher than it should be.

theologically they're very very similar...at least compared to other religions. eastern orthodoxy doesn't have the political structure or the rigid hierarchy the roman church does, it emphasies piety to the Blessed Virgin Mary somewhat more, and its theology is more mystical, but mystical catholics are very similar to Orthodox. of course, mystical muslims are similar to mystical christians and mystical hindus...mystics in general are similar...

Actually, quite a lot of UU's are not Christians of any sort, though you could call it originating as Protestant. They're more united by a rejection of a hateful, vindictive concept of god and beliefs concerning life on Earth rather than what they think about the divine.
I agree that the non x-tian religions should have gotten a few more divisions. Sunni and Shiite should have been there at the very least. The list could have been expanded to 40 easily, maybe 50.

I was raised Roman Catholic (36%) by the way, and I'm rather concerned with my Scientology (69%) levels, but as an Agnostic, I'm rather glad that Unitarian Universalism (100%) and Nontheist (92%) are my top two. Theravada Buddhism (92%) is rather cool too, although I'm not sure where all this "Liberalism" is coming from. ;)

I was surprised that Deism wasn't on the list either, as I probably would have scored very high on it. I still consider myself a Deist, despite never really being comfortable with putting a name on my beliefs. *Shrugs*
Likewise.
Unitarian is close enough I suppose... As for Satanism, it would be kind of amusing to work it into the questions. The whole "making a website about why websites suck" bit. ;)
Bwahahah, the misconception that Satanism is emo! :D If you've heard of Ayn Rand's Objectivism, well Satanism is more or less a ritualised form of it, with some minor alterations here and there.

Oh, I know. I'm familiar with the basic beliefs and the comparison to Objectivism is fairly apt. I was just poking fun at the line of questions that would ultimately lead to that result on a "Belief-O-Matic" type quiz. It's not really my cup of tea because frankly, I'd prefer being comfortably secular then bother with the rituals and antithematic nature of the whole thing. Besides, in the end I still believe in a higher power... Call it Deism, Pantheist, Unitarianism, or whatever.

Rand herself disliked rituals strongly. Personally, I find them rather seductive, shall we say? Plus in Satanism the rituals are for glorifying something I find worthy of worship. :D

Fair enough, fair enough. :D
Personally I've found that the more significance you impart to rituals and the more mundane they become, the less meaning they really have to the people involved. Take Catholics for example; chock full of empty gestures, redundancy, and obscure traditions that no one really understands or could be assed to learn about.... They just go along with it.
Of course with Satanism, as you say, the rituals pertain to something you actually care about, so there is little chance of them getting in the way. To each their own, I suppose.

Yes, that is a common criticism of Catholicism - that it focuses far too much on ornamentation and ritual (the Orthodox Church does too). The reason I suppose is they believe that it's the Church's duty to glorify God.

I'm not Satanist myself (although I do consider it from time to time), but to my knowledge the rituals are not as involved as that of the Catholic Church, and understanding of them is promoted.

theologically they're very very similar...at least compared to other religions. eastern orthodoxy doesn't have the political structure or the rigid hierarchy the roman church does, it emphasies piety to the Blessed Virgin Mary somewhat more, and its theology is more mystical, but mystical catholics are very similar to Orthodox.
I know, I am a Catholic. We also seem to be growing closer together, as evidenced by the recent Papal visit to Constantinople. Also, some Latin Rite Catholics are embracing Eastern theology and ways, just as some of the Easterners (mostly Eastern Catholics) were latinized, slightly, earlier.
A complaint I have heard of beliefnet on a Catholic forum is that they do not emphasise Eastern Rite Catholicism enough.

I’m being forced to become Catholic by my family, and am in the middle of CCD at the moment. It’s agonizingly dull stuff, but I just go along with it for the most part – I swear to God, I have influenced my Catechists more then they have me. It is unbelievable how little the teachers actually know about what they teach. Worst still, the fact that I understand most of their ceremonies and traditions and know their historical significance doesn’t make them a damn bit less dull.
Jesus would be very disappointed with them. :D

Eh, at the very least it’s admirable that you can understand and weigh a set of beliefs without actually accepting them as your own. A surprising amount of people utterly fail at that.

'twas a joking reference to Lin Chi's solution to the "if you meet the Buddha on the road" koan. ;)
Actually, quite a lot of UU's are not Christians of any sort, though you could call it originating as Protestant.
Indeed, you could more than call it that. ;) It's wandered, but as I posted in my explanation above, it has old roots in Christian traditions. (And, as I also said earlier, I was raised in UU and Presbitarianism, so I'm pretty familiar with the roots.)
I agree that the non x-tian religions should have gotten a few more divisions. Sunni and Shiite should have been there at the very least. The list could have been expanded to 40 easily, maybe 50.
Indeed, indeed.
Funny most JW's don't like SDA's so how do I have 55% in common with them.
I'm not all that familiar with the two, but I'd say it's safe to say that's because they're two Protestant denominations, so they probably have more basic similarities.

So many of the questions (make that the majority of them) shouldn't even be open to debate, such as homosexuality, abortion, etc.... As for literally all of the religious questions, I truthfully do not give a shit.
Really, the rights of one shouldn't be decided by another. And that's objective, no matter whose eyes you happen to be looking through, whether they be open or closed.
