What's your favorite song on Pink Floyd's The Dark Side of the Moon album?

I'm partial to Time, Money, Us and Them, and Brain Damage. I voted Brain Damage.

Have you ever noticed that Speak to Me/Breathe sounds A LOT like Time?

I personally prefer the bootleg live version entitled 'The Coming of Kohoutek'. Different arrangements, lyrics, rhythms - and it's not so horribly over-produced, either.

I should try to find that.

I'm partial to Money, Time, Us and Them and Great Gig in the Sky, but because the question is for one song, I'll go with Money. Great, great song...

Oh, definitely you should. It was recorded prior to the '72 DSOTM sessions, back when they'd tour new material before cleaning it up for a subsequent vinyl release. Good stuff.

Oh, it's a vinyl. Damn. And I just checked both ebay and google for it. Nothing.

Money.

It's a hit.

Money.

It's a hit.
Don't give me that do good good bullshit...

I like Time the best by far, mostly for this line I'm going to mess up some how because I don't feel like looking it up...

You run and you run to catch up with sun but it's sinking.
Racing around, to come up behind you again.
The sun is the same in a relative way but you're older.
Shorter of breath, and one day closer to death.

Mostly just the end does. It's commonly called "Breathe (reprise)"

Definitely Time.

Mostly because of what CtoaN said.

It's great poetry, and great music.

Especially this line is so damn true when you're getting older:

"Every year is getting shorter, never seem to find the time"

(I'm so glad I got the album after someone - I forgot who - mentioned the Wizard of Oz thing on NSG - so I bought it and the DVD. It's fun.)

(And again I'm reminded of Chronos...)

The whole album is perfect, but Time is the best track. The lyrics are excellent, and Gilmour's solo is simply stunning. It's so bendy and haunting.

Brain Damage/Eclipse next, then Money. The rest I don't know, but are all excellent. I really like Any Color You Like.

It's a concept album, meant to be heard as a whole, not dissected.

However, I can tell you this: were I ever to commit suicide (and I never will), I'd do it to "Us and Them". There's something both very relaxing and somehow releasing about that song.

I'm have Animals and Dark Side of the Moon. I'm gonna get a hold of The Division Bell, The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, Wish You Were Here, and The Wall soon.

Eh. The one album that's a lot better if you hear as a whole is Animals. Dark Side of the Moon it doesn't matter as much.

You succesfully creeped me out. I was listening to Us and Them when I read this post.

Get Ummagumma and the soundtrack to 'More' first. Leave the Wall to one side, ditto the Division Bell. Floyd kinda petered out after a while, and while the Wall is perhaps their single-biggest seller, it's hard to wallow through Roger Waters' sense of perceived injustices and self-indulgence willingly. Animals is where I draw a line. But Ummagumma is fantastic, both the live disc and to a lesser extent the studio disc. And More has great songs like Cymbaline and Cirrus Minor to offer.

It was a close one between Time and Great Gig in the Sky, but the lyrics of Time are a lot more meaningful, so I am going with Time.

It also has a rocking guitar solo.

Especially given that I don't think Great Gig in the Sky even HAS lyrics.

Yep, that's pretty much it.

Incidentally, I prefer the closest thing i've found to a live version of DSOTM: Pulse. Who wouldn't like a 9 minute version of Money?

I chose Breathe. The opening slide guitars are my favourite thing about the album probably, really gets me in the mood for the song.

Coincidentally, literally last week I saw Roger Waters in Brisbane. In the second set he did the entire DSOTM album. Needless to say it was dazzling and awe-inspiring.

I think my favorite song on that album is proably Us and Them. Not that I have listened to it recently. I just can't listen to Pink Floyd anymore. A lot of my friends played far too much of them, and these days the music just pisses me off. Ugh. It inspires rage just thinking about it... Then again, I am a very rage/hate-filled person, so maybe that has something to do with it.

I also think Time and i'll take credit for the relationship between Dark Side of the Moon and The Wizard of Oz, and just so you know it is an untruth about them being linked.

Time is doubly amazing because it wasn't Waters or Gilmour who wrote it, the ones normally credited with the genius which is Pink Floyd.

Eclipse is cool too.

Bit harsh to describe it as 'wailing'. I love that song. Went to see the Aussie Pink Floyd about a year ago, and they played through DSotM. GGitS was a-fucking-mazing.

I'm so old, I was a teenager when it came out.

I voted for Time. I love the intro, Gilmour's solo and the lyric already mentioned above about catching the sun.

Roger Waters did a couple of shows in Melbourne earlier this month, including the whole of DSotM and I managed to go with my nephew. I also saw the Waterless Floyd way back in the late 80s at the same venue. Waters had far more passion and bite whereas, in the Floyd show, the music seemed tired and worn out. The Floyd light show was amazing though.

(I'm a Gilmour fan more than a Waters fan.)

For me, its Eclipse. I tend to listen to the album as a whole, and I really love the way it sort of wraps up the entire, fantastic thing; with the wailing woman in the background and the great lyrics, it just puts the right mood into me after I've listened to. It makes me feel thoroughly satisfied.

I have all the Floyd albums and I think it's down to taste. I prefer the more commercial and later Floyd, Ummagumma sucks and More is tolerable but that's my taste. Animals, DSOTM, WYWH and The Wall are much better IMHO, anyway as good as David Gilmour is, Roger Waters kicks Floyds butt.

Best track on DSOTM for me is Speak To Me/Breathe (In The Air)

I would also recommend the reggae version of Speak To Me/Breathe by the Easy Star All Stars & Sluggy Ranks on Dub Side Of The Moon, a track that must be played at full volume :D
