I know it has been talked about in some other threads but this is the first picture I've seen. The weatherman said the other night the reason for the snow is the lakes didn't freeze over as they normally would this time of year. Then the cold artic front came through picks up the water off the lakes and it comes back down as snow.

A cubic foot of water is 62.4 lbs so I have no idea what it would be for snow. I guess it depends on how densely it's packed in.

No you don't. We've gotten more snow than that accumulated over close to nine weeks now. Not all at once, of course, but more snow overall.

...it's finally melting though...we might actually be free of it finally...

it depends on the snows water content the "wetter" the snow the heavier it will be the "drier" the snow the lighter it will be

Lake Ontario, where all this lake effect came from, does not freeze over. It will ice up around the perimeter yes, but it never is fully covered. Lake Erie otoh, will freeze over as it's only 60' deep. (iirc) We rarely get lake effect from Erie in the central part of the state, it's the Ontario snow machine that covers us. There's ample surface area in the middle of the lake for those cold blasts to pick up moisture all winter long.

The lake effect bands usually move north and south as the winds change direction, but last week, it's been pretty steady in the same direction, dumping it all along the same band. Usually they'd get to share the love with Watertown and Syracuse, but not so much this time.

Hamilton is way south of all this. You will get snow, but you won't die.
