Dinosaurs to take over St. Paul this summer

Street corner statues will be returning to St. Paul, but this time as dinosaurs rather than cartoon characters.

The city plans to place 80 statues around town next summer to celebrate the Science Museum of Minnesota's 100th anniversary.

The dinosaur rollout will be based on a statue blitz staged last summer in Aurora, Ill., in cooperation with its SciTech Hands-On Museum. A paleontologist there designed a Rebbachisaurus statue -- called "Becky" for short -- that measures about 8 feet 9 inches from nose to tail and roughly 4 feet high.

St. Paul held a similar celebration each summer from 2000 to 2004 when it placed statues of characters from the "Peanuts" comic strip around town in honor of creator Charles Schulz, who grew up in St. Paul.

Twenty additional dinosaur statues will also be placed at parks in Minneapolis to reflect the science museum's regional appeal.
