People who speak celtic languages, the modern majority of which are the ethnic Scots, Welsh and Irish.

there is very little from the archaeological record, genetics, or anthropology that suggests any sort of homogenous culture, let alone actual ethnic group, known as 'the celts'. there are certainly modern remnants of ancient cultures that were not latinised and which reside in the marginal areas of western europe including, as you say, ireland, scotland and wales, but also cornwall, brittany and small pockets of spain. the only contemporary historical records from the time 'the celts' were supposed to have existed that exist describing them as one people are from caesar describing, as a bunch, all the people north and west of his empire, whom his forces had yet to make contact with. certainly there have been large cultural groupings across western europe throughout the period that 'the celts' were supposed to have existed, but to lump them all under such an umburella term does little justice to the immense diversity of cultures withing this supposed group.

Well, I said the modern majority and that is the Scots, Welsh and Irish. Cornwall, Brittany, Spanish group (didn't know that some were there) and the Isles of Man (I think) are a rather small group.

The Irish and Scots seem to be almost the same ethnicity but they do have different culture. Ethnicity does not mean a homogenous culture (as evinced by the germanic countries, who have a variety of culture but the same ethnicity).

The Welsh and other 'celtic' groups may have differed enough to be different ethnicities but they can probably still be put into that group as an ethnic group, not culture (though they do have common language ties).

Then again, that is my personal take of it.

distinguishing between ethnicity and cultural group is futile as the former cannot exist without the latter. the very definition of an ethnicity requires that it represent a homogenous culture, it is far more than simply genetic(racial) or linguistic ties, although these do play a part. if it was just language and genetics that denoted an ethnic group then there is little enough genetic variation in the entire indo-european language group to represent a single ethnicity. the simple fact is 'the celts' have never existed as a single ethnicity and they certainly do not today, at least not in any real relation to how their various cultures were manifest during the Iron Age. there has however been something of a resurgence of 'celtic' culture since the enlightenment in response to ideas of nationalism and national self determination - everyone wants a piece of the action - but this is largely based on invention drawn from poetry and sagas and songs and art created during the preceding romantic period and this is why a 'celtic' culture may appear to be represented by a single linking factor that, for want of a better word, we can call 'celticness'.

American is missing.

You're wanting the melting pot. I'm giving the fondue.

What where your ancesters before coming to America?

Nationality and ethnicity aren't the same thing.

So you want ethnicities, not nationalities. My ancestors were slaves. The poll discriminates against blacks and other dark people. Boo!!!!

Why would that matter? You're asking about nationality.

And Asians for that matter.

But, meh, I guess you have to be a colonial to understand this obsession with one's "roots".

Asians too! That's half of the entire world not being able to vote on this lousy, discriminatory poll. Not to mention "Other" is grouped with Alien... that's messed up.

well if you follow Said's line of thinking that's exactly what the 'Other' is. not that i believe that it was the intention of the pollster to note this.

The poll annoys me. The majority of my European ancestors came to the American continent over 300 years ago, which would make my nationality clearly American, I would think, and then I'm half Japanese. Argh. Silly poll.

I was born in America. My parents were born in America. My grandparents were born in America. My great grandparents were born in America. My great grandparents were born in America. My great-great grandparents were born in America.

I am American. Thanks.

You want to know about before that? Well, there's: German, English, Welsh, French-Canadian, Northern Native American, Dutch, and Irish.

... selects alien?

Since it seems, however, that you want to know where my ancestors lived rather than what my passport says, then "mutt" would be about as close as I can reasonably come. The biggest chunks of my ancestry that I know of are Scottish and German, but most of Europe seems to be mixed in my genes somewhere, along with some Cherokee.

Finnish
Norwegian
Irish

Interesting. I didn't know that.

This poll really should be multiple choice, btw... Many of us (myself included) are of mixed descent.

Edit: I'm therefore voting "Other", but this poll is seriously flawed. Not only is it not multi-choice, it excludes all non-European "nationalities".

Mine is complex. I consider myself to be Irish, but I live in England and I have a British passport. I could have both, but I havn't got round to applying for my Irish one yet.

In terms of blood, I'm 5/8 Irish, 1/8 Belgian, 3/32 Scottish, 1/16 Welsh, 1/16 American and 1/32 French.

you probably mean ethnicity/ancestry, not nationality.

My nationality is English, my ethnicity is mostly English with some Welsh and Irish.
