Do any of you play Civilization 4 by any chance? I am posting this thread to discover some potential strategies for my games. Usually I just nuke 'em till they surrender and I move in for the kill, but that is getting old. Lets go, come on give me some tips for playing CIV 4.

I play Civ II and Tribal Wars (http://www.tribalwars.net), in fact i was playing Civ II last night got unbelievably bored with it and gave up, the CPU Map generator gave me a small island large enough for 5 cities to start off with, when i lost my first Trireme on the first turn that i had it, i was like OMGWTFBBQGTFOSTFU!!!1!!ELVENTYONE!, and then stopped playing it.

Why the hell are you playing CIV II anyway. I hated that game when it came out, and I still hate it. CIV IV is by far the best one. Though there is still room for some major improvments.

Yeah sorry about that. I had to endure it for a time. It's just until the mods feel they can trust you. You get a few fascists/racists that create nations and start posting filth.

Not to worry it'll be over soon.

There is always the possible of overrunning enemy CIVS with tanks and other armoured vehicles. That way I don't lower my world standing by using nukes. But nukes are so much faster, and the big red button is pretty :D

I normally play on smaller. maps. I like to micromanage so larger maps mean too many cities and my brain implodes from having to micromanage them all.

I normally pack the maximum amount of civilizations in as well, and normally play on a terra map as well. The world has already turned into a bloodbath before you've had time to find copper for your first axeman normally. Needless to day that such games don't normally last into the industrial era, let alone the modern era. I normally play as the romans. 8 strength plus a barracks and one little skirmish (5xp both on raider) means a 12 attacking strength on cities that are still defended by archers. I almost feel sorry for the computer sometimes, but then I remember that they're cheating like hell. That's incidently why I get bored of Civ, the computer is thick as shit on all difficultly levels, it's just on the harder levels it's allowed to cheat.

After the legions I move on to catapults. They might have less strength, but they can withdraw if they get into trouble and can reduce the defense of a city. I keep a stack of legion raiders safe, upgrade them to macemen and continue attack, making more elite raiders. If you do get to the gunpowder age them you can upgrade to them musketeers and riflemen and they will retain their raider upgrades... with the most elite of units this means a rifleman can have a strength of 24 when attacking. I actually do feel sorry for the computer at this point.

Lets go, come on give me some tips for playing CIV 4.The cleverest strategy is to obtain a copy of Warlords and then to play marathon. You need Warlords because without the Chinese Wall, Barbarians become a serious nuisance. Then you outstrip everyone in technology, which is easier in such a long game. You'll also have longer time intervals in which to make military use of your superior technology.

i did play Civ4 quite a lot last year i think... my basic strategy was don't expand too much at the beginning but instead concentrate on research and making what i have fucking good (building defenses mostly, little attack units), and then asap exploring and colonising new land (assuming there are other islands)

works quite well for me :)

I believe it's a jolt thing though, and the NS mods didn't have any input into it.

Anyway...I used to play Civ 4 quite a bit, but Europa Universalis III is what's rocking my world at the moment. :D

My basic strategy in Civ though is to get bronze working and chop rush (use a worker to cut down a forest so you get the bonus shields) a settler ASAP...this will reduce the amount of population growth wasted on building said settler. Then colonise the nearest nice looking area, then wait until you have located some strategic resources before building more cities (hopefully after getting mathematics - IIRC - for a further chop rush bonus). Don't expand so much that your research rate will fall below 80%, or in the worst case, 70%. Otherwise you'll fall behind, and have a large-yet-severely-weak empire.

If you can manage a start like that, you'll have a couple of large cities but plenty of room to expand. Once you can get a tech advantage, conquer your nearest opponent. My favourite civ for this strategy is the Romans, the legionnaires are very powerful in the early-to-mid game. If you're lucky, you might be on an island continent with one or two civs on it, can conquer them with relative ease, and then remain in isolation building your strength and technology until the modern age. (in this situation, the tech penalties won't matter, because you should be large enough to have a lot of research points anyway)

I'm a Civ III'er....

Sometimes I get bored and just build enough nukes to spell my name on the map then finish the interplanetary fun factory.

Nowadays I mainly play Alpha Centauri Planetary Pack...I love the customization of that game. Good stuff.

I haven't played that, but I have played "Galactic Civilizations II", I'm not sure how they compare in terms of gameplay.

Out of all the Civ games, I played Civ II the most. That game was amazing. Civ III was absolutely awful. Civ IV is pretty decent though, and I've been playing that a lot lately.

Civ IV is pure awesome. My personal favourite strategy is to play a financial civ (usually England, with Elizabeth). Go straight for archers, and build 2 colonies, followed by Stonehenge. Then work on roads, and gun for the cottage tech and start cottage spamming like there's no tomorrow. The high commerce rate keeps your tech score relatively high, and you can afford a slightly larger empire when you start to expand.

And with the English, the Redcoat is a simply kick-ass unit.

I also tend to play the Terra map as well. With a higher tech level, if you gun for astronomy before anyone else, you can start shipping those fearsome Redcoats to the Barbarian continent and start mopping up cities, with very little serious interference. Build cities between the original barb cities and you've got yourself a glorious little empire.
