Do this: Go up to a friend and ask them, "Missing something?", with a smile on your face, and watch their reaction, which will always involve looking through their personal items to see what you took.

They then accuse you of taking their things, and depending on their tone, you can tell what their attitude towards you is.

Yes, but where is the 'physcology' in all this?

I think it'd be more interesting to ask them if they are missing something, let them rummage through their stuff and start interrogating you.

Then, you chop off their fingers.

I guess I just have more interesting friends - when I go up to a friend with a smile on my face and ask "Missing something?" the first thing they do is double check that they are in fact wearing pants.

If you ask someone if they are "missing something" that implies that they are actually missing something and you know it. When they cannot find what they are missing it is quite understandable for them to ask you what they are missing.

This is not a "psychological experiment", but a lesson in idioms.

nope, their reply, after searching their pockets, is "no, why? did you find something?"

and this is even if it's strangers.

I think it's way creepier to say, "do you know what happened after you blacked out last night?"
