Quantico Islamic Center Dedicated (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/06/06/AR2006060601529.html)

Yes, it's a very old article. But there was a mention of an Islamic Center at Quantico in a recent news show I watched or listened to and I thought it would be worth digging it up. Especially since I'm in a really snarky mood and I want to read the reactions from the regular members of the |\/|0zl3|\/|z r 3b1l Peanut Gallery like New Mitanni and Eve "The Artist Formerly Known As Deep Kimchi" Online when they realize that oh noes, t3h 3b1l |\/|0zl3|\/|z have infiltrated the Marines! The |-|00r0rr! Or is it the |-|00rarr?

Good.

If the middle east perceives this as having a sizable component of muslims involved int he US Military, then perhaps they'll feel it's less of a war on Islam and more of the US just having a garden variety overreaction that'll cool off pretty soon.

That might not be much better.

One way they'll think we're out to kill all of them, the other they'll think we've thrown a temper tantrum and aren't being as tactful or precise as we should be, but we'll calm down when we get a sucker and everything will be back to normal after that (or whatever passes for normal in that region).

You forget that Hiroshima and Nagasaki are widely perceived outside the U.S. as an overreaction.

I would have thought the beards and "Death-to-America" marching cadences would have been a bit of a giveaway....Plus the tendency to throw away the pin and run with the grenade...

And what came of them? Some griping from Japan, moaning from the USSR?

Yeah, that's about it.

You miss the point. A good chunk of the world, when thinking of the U.S. overreacting, thinks of nuclear weaponry being used. If you think you're going to be nuked, you'll do pretty much anything.

They should think what we're doing in Iraq right now as what happens when the US overreacts, not some historic event that happened 62 years ago.

Why? It looks far more like revenge for the first Gulf War or a power grab than an overreaction.

weird, at least in Britain my experience has been that people tend to connect a US over reaction to a B-52 blowing up a village...

You can always count on a reporter to find the one person that sees the dark cloud around the sliver lining. Imagine the thrill of being able to connect Abu-Graib to a Muslim activity on a Marine base. Who says the media isn't biased?

I'm only digging this up again because like Reality Television, "|\/|0zl3|\/|z r 3b1l" threads refuse to die and fade away.

And to ask why God-fearing Real Americans like New Mitanni, Deep Kimchi and Myrmi, etc. aren't doing their part to fight off t3h 3b1l |\/|0zl3|\/|z and shoot every Marine they can find as Al-Qaeda Collaborators.

You've certainly done your part to increase the stupidity quotient on the boards.

And cute attempts at snark aside, there's still the point that you and your Bushevik Comrades haven't addressed the specific issue of the Islamic Center and thus implicit approval or tolerance of Muslims by the USMC. Just a couple of red herrings about "The Liberal Media" bringing up Abu Ghraib at the ceremony and this nonsequitur about "the stupidity quotient".

Well, with a lukewarm response looks like we have a conclusive result:

Threads that scream and bitch about how Muslims are evil, threatening human lives everywhere and ought to be exterminated get plenty of coverage.

Threads that say Muslims are people just like everyone else? Ignored into oblivion.

You be the judge, people.

I'll take a wild leap and speculate that the "Muslims are evil" threads get replied to heavily is due to the fact that most people here disagree with the idea that Muslims are evil and feel compelled to contest it hotly. Whereas "Muslims are people like everyone else" gets few replies because there's little to add beyond "QFT".

I know it's difficult for an either/or person like you to understand, but it might just be that I find nothing wrong with the Islamic center opening at Quantico. The very fact that the the reporter found it necessary to slant the article against the USMC isn't a red herring, but a clear case of media bias against the military. You need to read me a little better. I don't recall, nor can I find any mention of "liberal" media in my posts. Only of "biased" media.

And the only bias you ever harp on are the ones that don't conform to your dogma, i.e. "Liberal." You certainly never had anything bad to say about FOXNews.

And the point is, how does one hold contradictory views that Islam is inherently a violent and oppressive religion yet at the same time accept the fact that one of the armed forces of a democratic and secular country has established a center that caters to the needs of the followers of said "inherently violent and oppressive religion"?

Orwell had a word for that. Doublethink.

Hiroshima and Nagasaki are perceived in China and South Korea as sweet, sweet revenge.

First guy on this thread to raise the "|\/|0zl3|\/|z r 3b1l" alarm gets a free ticket to visit the Marine Muslim center - wearing a T-shirt displaying his opinions.

Remember, these guys aren't just Muslims. They're Marines.
