Iran agreed to talks with the United States, to recognize Israel, to systematically verify that their nuclear program was for peaceful purposes.... and then what happened? Who shit the bed on this deal and ruined a grand opportunity. My first guess is Darth Cheney himself. What do you all think?

No, no, no. It's not "Darth Cheney."

Cheney = Emperor Palpatine

Bush = Darth Vader

Who's to blame? It's a complex question. Condi was the one directly responsible for blowing the negotiations, but Rice is Secretary of State precisely because she is a lousy diplomat. The negotiations were intended to fail. The Iranians, not being complete fools, knew that, which is probably why they felt comfortable enough to offer so much in the first place - now they can say "See? We tried to be reasonable and the US didn't accept it."

But who put Condi in the job in the first place? Well, Bush directly nominated her, but one senses the hidden hand of the Phantom Menace pulling the strings here. Cheney is an evil bastard at heart, if he has a heart, which is doubtful.

He has a heart, but it barely functions. :p

He does, however, lack a soul.

I'm glad that this was multiple choice.
I choose:
Emperor George W. Bush II
Dick (as his first name suggests) Cheney
and
"Walking Frankenstein and Abomination of Nature" Condoleezza Rice

I figure Iran just bought their first fax machine and decided to see what kind of pranks they could play with it. Can anyone believe that this was ever a serious offer from a country that calls us the "Great Satan"?

Not me.

As to the mess, I blame Britain and the rest of Europe and I blame Eisenhower.

It better suits the current regime to have Iran as a clearly defined "enemy".

Certainly. They probably wanted a seat in the UN security council and nuclear disarmament from Israel in return.

what i know, and i think anyone who thinks about it enough and honestly enough can read between the lines, is the forces that put the bush regeme in power.

sadam didn't want war either.
even if a nation might occasionaly need "regeme chainge" (the u.s. for the past six years certainly has), the kind of mess that is created by imposing it by the use of military force bennifits no one.

what does iran have to surrender for? and for that matter, what bussiness does the u.s., or any other nation have, unilateraly telling some other nation, what kind of weapons, or any damd thing else, it may or may not possess?

now iran needs to stop giving its baha'is a bad time, and may need to clean up some other aspects of its act, but the last thing in hell that would bennifit its doing so, would be to destroy its infrastructure and kill hundreds of thousands of its civilians as the bush regeme did in afghanistan and iraq and by the proxy of israel in lebinon and palistinian west bank and gaza.

none of the current war on anything has a damd thing to do with helping anyone in any way, but only with creating enimies out of thin air to scare american civilians into staying home and voting for pseudo-religeous, pseudo-conservative republicans, and their grandoise dreams of a world dictatorship headed by themselves and kissing the ass of the economics of mega corporations.

comfort to the enimy? there is no enimy but the one among us, the rand corporation, the heritage foundation, and an international corporatocracy that doesn't give a dam about anything, even anyone's survival, but the mindless automatic persuit of meaningless symbolic 'value'.

Why ? The returns for Iran would VASTLY outweigh what they gave up. For one, they would instantly become the dominant nation in the region, above Israel. Especially that last part would be very nice for them.
Second, they would get the sanctions lifted. With the countries wealth of resources and some decent investments this could make Iran a global superpower in less than 10 years.

If *we* want that is another question.

I would say this all started with the Great Game and the Brits deciding that the Persians really didnt need all those nice ports they had in the Gulf.

Of course, maybe little Pauli did the world a favor my cancelling Catherines Persian Expidition...or maybe not.

Voters that thought having a president, who managed to avoid going to Vietnam, that thinks of himself as a crusader is a GOOD idea when in a war with Islamic country.
