French Presidential candidate may campaign from within prison

José Bové, a left-wing, anti-neoliberal, anti-GMO farmer and candidate for the French Presidential election, has been sentenced to 4 months in prison for destroying GMO crops. He's still allowed to run for the election, and may therefore be campaigning from behind bars - the first time this has ever happened in France.

It would be amusing if he were elected while in prison. :D (He won't be, though. He's a "minor" candidate.)

The mustachioed sheep farmer shot to worldwide fame in 1999 after trashing a half-built McDonald's outlet in southern France and he has called for a moratorium on GM crops as part of his campaign against what he has termed "malbouffe", or bad food.

His activism has already earned him three spells in prison, for the McDonald's incident in 1999, and in 2001 and 2003 for ripping up GM crops.

Bove won expressions of support from rival candidates of the left including Marie-George Buffet of the French Communist Party.

[...]

In 1987 he founded the radical Small Farmers Confederation to champion the cause of small producers, launching a crusade against fast-food and GM crops.

Tommy Sheridan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tommy_Sheridan) got elected to the Glasgow City Council while in prison, but that's not quite as, well, prestigious as President, is it?;)

Do you know which party he would be running with/for, or as an independent?

Eugene V. Debs "was a candidate for President of the United States in 1900 as a member of the Social Democratic Party. He was later the Socialist Party of America candidate for President in 1904, 1908, 1912, and 1920, the final time from prison."

We Americans have had Presidential candidates run from prison as early as 1920. The man was Eugene V. Debs, a socialist, who had been imprisoned for advocating that people dodge the draft for the First World War.

Isn't he the fascist? If so, yes.

Did you read about what he and his party tried to do on Second Life?

Fascist, racist, anti-Semite, Holocaust denier, you name it.

Did you read about what he and his party tried to do on Second Life?

Probably as an independent.

We French have a lot of catching up to do. :D

Le Pen. Yes, he is, still as leader of the Front National. In fact I glanced at the TV a few minutes ago and he was being interviewed.

Did you read about what he and his party tried to do on Second Life?

His party has set up an office in Second Life, to "inform" people, and to encourage people to come to them under cover of relative anonymity. See the video here (http://www.france24.com/france24Public/fr/nouvelles/france/20070125-le-pen-second-life.html) (in French, sorry, but the images are telling enough).
