I think I'm the only one to post on this, if not I apologise. A former center came out today as the 1st NBA player to do so. It doesn't really bother me if a pro athlete is gay. Whether they are good or not is all that is important to me.

What do you make of it? Do you think more athletes should come out and do you care if they are gay?

He was only in the league five years. I remember when he played for the Magic, though I'm not sure he is really well known.

Yes.

Not because I particularly care how they live their lives, but because as significant cultural figures, their out status can help counter homophobia.

and we should care because? No seriously, why should we actually give a rats ass about this? I mean my God, we're trying to achieve the notions of "equality" in our society, and yet, here we are separating ourself by talking about what we do in the privacy of our own home. I really don't care, I honestly don't, the only time I would ever be convinced to give a rats ass of what goes on in the bedroom is either A. it's my bedroom and Kay is there, or B. a pedophile is violating a child. Other than that, I honestly could care less about anyone being gay. So you like the same sex, whoopee doo!

While we're on the subject, am I the only one who found it to be pointless that during the Super Bowl, they kept on commenting about how there are two black head coaches and that this was the first time a black head coach won the Super Bowl? Well, tell you what there Molly Sunshine, I don't care if the guy was purple, had a horn, and an ass like a Hippo, if he's a great coach, then that's all I care about, sexual orientation and the color of your skin is pointless to me and I really don't give a rats ass.

It's not that we should care and rejoice that someone is gay, it's that this will hopefully break down the severly homophobic attitude of athletics. Too many people DO care if an athlete is gay, and will mock and make fun of any athlete that might be percieved as gay in any way. If more athletes are open about their homosexuality(considering the number of pro athletes there are, I'm guessing there are at least a few gay ones), maybe less people will be bothered by what consenting adults do in the privacy of their own home.

He's writing an auto-biography. One would expect something that played such a large part in his life would be included in it.

Wait a minute. One plural has an apostrophe, and the next one doesn't? At least you could be consistent and make both of them wrong, but noooooo...

A large part?

Yes. Speaking generally, one's sexual orientation is not limited to the bedroom. It does not just determine who we lust after, but also who we come to love. Being 'in the closet' can be extremely difficult, not just because one fears persecution, but also because one cannot pursue someone they may have feelings towards.

Imagine never being able to take a girl you like out for a proper date. Imagine seeing a movie with her and not being able to even just put your arm around her; imagine not being able to hold her hand or trade drinks from a wine glass (ok, that's a little old fashioned, but you get the drift). Given the importance a person's own body and mind can place on finding contentment with another human being, and the contradiction to society's perception that this human being shoulder be of the opposite gender, it can add a great amount of stress and hardship to someone's life.

So, as you can see, a man or woman's sexual orientation can extend to touch a great deal of his life depending on how social a person he is. When one comes out, a burden disappears. While it takes some time, they'll eventually learn that they don't have to hide who they are. They may still get the same strange glances they would've otherwise while, say, holding their partner's hand, but they'll have the freedom to think "So what?" instead of "If this gets around, I'll be ostracized."

In this vein, it's not that high-profile individuals seek to draw attention to themselves or their sex lives by coming out (at least not beyond being a role model for troubled gays and lesbians who may need someone to look up to), but to free themselves from their own restrictions and the restrictions they feel are placed on them by popular opinion. They don't have to worry about hiding themselves or their partner for fear of rumors circulating, since the truth will be known to their fans. It's a lot easier to say "Hey, I'm gay." in a novel or to an interviewer, than spend the rest of your career answering questions from fans and reporters revolving around "I hear you like men.", and facing the negative responses that can be brought on if those are answered truthfully to the wrong person.

As long as they can do their job, I don't care if any celebrity is gay or straight. What does his preference have to do with his ability to play basketball?

You should care because indifference allows for hatred. Where I live there's a saying that goes "he who keeps silent, agrees". If you don't care about it and don't speak up when it is being mocked, then you allow for the hatred to continue and therefore agree with it.

And there are no purple people with horns. Just so you know. ;)

You should care because indiference allows hatred. Where I live there's a saying that goes: "he who keeps silent, agrees". If you don't care, you probably won't say anythng if you hear anyone mocking it, and they will think you agree with it. That way you help in the continuing and growing of the hatred. When you speak up against it, people will be confronted with a different opinion and are forced to think about what they just said. So as long as there's hatred, please care.

And there are no purple people with horns, just so you know. ;)
