Is it possible for a tumor to become sentient? What mould happen if it did? Would you want a giant one-ton tumor to be your bodyguard and lackey that swallows up your enemies and people who won't pay you back?

Well, at the very least we know that consciousness requires a nervous system and a computational system similar to that used in brains, especially those of humans, dolphins, elephants, and other species of primate. A tumor in and of itself is just a mass of cells, so it can't become conscious without the machinery, so to speak, that enables consciousness to emerge.

So, if the tumor had a brain and nervous system, then yes. But then it wouldn't really be a tumor...

But then again, given that consciousness is so poorly understood it's possible that there are other ways it can emerge.

Imagine a guy who's brain tumor has developed it's own personality and is slowly taking over his body as it kills his brain. Sounds like it should be an X-files episode.

That's the only answer I can come up with. It might also have explained why he rolled his eyes at his own OP.
Quite.

I initially thought sentient tumors were awful. Then they grew on me.

Maybe this is his tumor speaking and he is hoping to find others of his kind so that they can procreate and make little tumor babies :D

i suppose it's theoretically possible since tumors can develop their own vascular systems and can grow teeth. i would have thought it would need to develop for ages to get to that point though, and it would need to have the right kind of corrupted cells to begin with.
