about time too. now if only the big labels will follow suit they might be able to set up a reasonably operable legal download service that people will actually want to use.

Just a bunch of bullshit, really.

Look at this
"In such a world, any player can play music purchased from any store, and any store can sell music which is playable on all players.

"This is clearly the best alternative for consumers, and Apple would embrace it in a heartbeat." he wrote.
He is just trying to dodge the fact that Apple's specific DRM management is bordering on antitrust, emphasized by the very next paragraph:
Apple uses its own DRM system known as FairPlay, which means music downloaded from the iTunes store can be played only on iPods.
If Apple wanted to "embrace" having music bought anywhere playable on any mp3 player, they could have fucking done it. Instead, they create their own specific DRM system that allows them to prevent people from playing music they paid for on any player but Apple's.

Apple is full of shit and always will be until some one calls them on it which no one has really bothered to yet.

I think Jobs is acknowledging the fact that if they are being pushed out of foreign markets, they will switch to free music.

the point of the article is that they have been forced to seriously consider dropping their ridiculous DRM system because of it's anti-trust and anti-competitive nature which is being challenged across the board. so far it's only a vague sort of blog entry by Jobs but the fact that he's personally put his name to such a consideration and directly associated it with his company is surely a good sign.
