Afraid not - it's simply part of human nature to be stupid and hateful.

For a while there I had some hope that they were at least going away where I live (North Carolina). About 10 years ago, my local newspaper reported that the average age of the remaining Klansmen in North Carolina was 63, and they had few members younger than 55 - the pointy white hats mostly served to cover up graying and/or balding heads. This was in part because the guys who would have been their young recruits thought the NC Klan wasn't radical enough, so they were joining neo-Nazi groups and (the key point) moving to Western states, mostly Montana. So it seemed that the local hatemongers were either dying out or moving away.

Of course, it couldn't last. The Carolina Knights of the KKK still isn't very active, but there are some newer hate groups around, mostly disguising themselves as the "kinder, gentler" racism of "white nationalism". They've gotten a lot of new recruits in response to the surge of Hispanic immigration into North Carolina, which has seriously upset the old white/black racial dynamic that used to prevail around here.

The battle for sanity continues, and we're losing. :rolleyes:

Nope. As long as there are people who are stupid enough to believe that the reason their lives are shitty is because people who look slightly different from them are sabotaging their prospects, groups like the Klan will survive.

Beacuse WWII had such a big impact on British society, you frequently hear (or used to hear) right-wingers saying things like 'we didn't fight a war against the Germans just for all the foreigners to etc etc'. As you rightly point out, the logic is somewhat twisted. I like twisted logic, it amuses me, so I air it whenever possible. That remark was not intended seriously.
