Your thoughts?

I might just get fired for obeying the law. The area where I live is currently under a level two weather advisory/emergency which means stay off the road if you can avoid it. My place of employment is under a level three which means it's illegal to be on the road unless you are emergency services. Now, I have to cross counties to get there and it's a forty-five minute to an hour long commute under normal circumstances. I just got off the phone with my supervisor and despite all this was told if I don't show up to call tomorrow to see if I still have a job. Granted, my view is a little biased, but I think this is pretty messed up. So, your thoughts?

I work for a shipping company called Airborne Express. It's essentially the aerial half of DHL but we haul stuff for FedEx, UPS, USPS, and others. I move boxes from a slide to a container roughly two and a half feet away. I understand that people depend on the company for their mail, but I don't think I should get fired for being unable to legally make it there.

now you have a choice to make.

if you really want to keep your job...

talk to your boss, see if you can camp out there since he's requiring you to be there. then pack accordingly. (hey, maybe you can use their computer system... hint, hint.) I work in a Hospital, so if there is a natural disaster/storm, I'll pack up and move to my office. Large generator to keep the power going... food from the cafeteria... and I can make myself useful if need be. ;)

If you really don't care...

contact Human Resources and find out your options. if it's a health hazzard to go to work, then by all means, you cannot be forced to go to work UNLESS your job is essential. (and essential by THEIR definition, not yours.)

If you are fired, look at what legal options you have. you may get a very GENEROUS severance package as well as glowing references from this.

that is fucked up. this is what labour laws and unions are for. are you in one? if not, hopefully your labour laws will protect your rights here.

I agree with this junii guy. I feel for you though dude. I live in southern ohio and I'm also under a snow alert level 2 believe it or not. If your job is truly essential I guess you'd have to find some way of getting there. Then again maybe your boss is a shady dude or dudette.

Break a leg on your way to work and ask for compensation. Perhaps you can sue and get more because they made you work when it was unsafe beyond the nature of job.
