I'm marinating tofu for the first time ever.

Well, it's my first time marinating anything... it's not that I don't cook a lot as I've cooked for myself for the past four years, but I've been trying to be a little fancy lately.

For anything, or for tofu? Lots of marinades at www.foodnetwork.com.

If I were to eat Tofu, I would marinate it in beef stock, black peppercorns, bacon fat and heavy cream - which would defeat the entire purpose of Tofu, I guess.

for anything. i tend to make them up as i go along but i don't really know where to start, like what base to use, what quantities of spices and flavouring, what sort of preperation it needs before it's poured over the food. i've done marinades for sardine, steak, lamb and chicken. the chicken one was the worst, i wasn't sure whether the marinade should be cold or hot or what, but i put it over hot and it ended up partially cooking the chicken and not really giving it any flavour.

thanks for the link, i'll have a look through :)

I kinda made this one up, so I'm not sure how it will work.

Basically, I chopped up 4 cloves of garlic and put in some sweet and sour sauce, soy sauce, lime juice, chopped up pickled jalepenos and water until I thought the consistency was good and then I put the little cubes of tofu in.

I figure if I let it sit in the fridge for an hour it will be good and I'll dump whatever didn't absorb in as a sauce.

More garlic!!!

That definitely sounds quite flavorful. :D

good luck :)

Tofu is great for taking on the flavors of whatever its being cooked with so I imagine it's also great to marinade.

You're welcome. I'm a great believer in making it up as I go along, but there's something to be said for getting a few basics down first and maybe building on those. Have fun! (Oh, and the search engine isn't the greatest, it tends to bring back more than you want rather than less.)

sounds like my tofu laab (larb, laap) recipe almost ecxcept with added sweet and sour

EDIT: also it's missing fresh mint leaves

serve on lettuce with rice to get even closer to it :p

I don't want to be food) and thinking about buying some and doing the whole marinate thing but I chickened out.

Which is to say I bought chicken.

But no marinade.

Well, I can throw in more garlic when I do the stir frying bit...

And it seems like it's definitely flavourful... whether or not it will be a good flavour I'll find out in a while.. but all the component parts are good individually, so hopefully they'll be good together.

I'm out of lettuce, but I was planning on doing it with rice or noodles I haven't decided which, but I was leaning towards rice.

The fact that more people than vegitarians eat tofu doesn't do a thing to make it taste better though.

We are going to have to disagree here. I really can't stand eating it. Give me a cheeseburger instead, we'll get along better. ;)

I can understand that. I really hate the taste of brocoli so I like to eat in when it is drenched in cheese sauce. Hides the nauseating taste just fine. Do the same thing with tofu and you can pretend you aren't even eating it. :)

Considering that it's tofu being marinated, I hope the marinade consists of a nice steak. Is it steak-i or steak-u in Japanese?

Maybe you regard beef, cheese and tofu as fundamental ingredients, but I don't. I'll tell you when you're older. In fact one of tofu's main flaws is that it's often too similar in taste and texture to beef burgers.

I would have to say that beef is most certainly a critical ingredient for many meals. You can do much more with it then just having a burger, you know. Further, I never suggested that these examples are fundamental ingredients for meals. Simply curious what your tastes were since you rejected both. But I guess I should remember what they say about curiosity...

I don't usually name dishes, I usually just make them again...

Although I didn't eat just the tofu, I made it in a stir fry with a bit mroe garlic, an onion, a jalepeno pepper, a red bell pepper, half a tomato and a mushroom. Then I put it on some brown rice.

sounds good. how will you cook it, or will you eat it like that.

For tofu, I like simple garnishes.

Tuna, drained.
Fried in a pan till lightly browned,
add one tbs sugar and 1 cup shoyu.
continue to cook untill dark brown.
garnish on tofu.
