Your Must-See Event?

The Berlin International Film Festival is coming up and I'll be spending the better part of the next two weeks standing in line for tickets, riding the subway, and sitting in movie theaters.

My time table is complete, I'll be watching 20 movies (19, if I decide against the 217 minute documentary about the Idaho state legislature after all :p) at least five of which will totally suck, and I will get up at 6am (aka the time I went to bed up until a day ago) tomorrow to stand in a line at a ticket booth that opens at 10am.

I love it. :)

My friends have gotten used to it but still look at me in a way that gently reminds me that they think I'm just a tad off my rocker.

So, what is your personal must-see event? The thing that you can't miss but others may be shaking their heads about behind your back?

Some three-day mud rock fest? The annual Star Trek convention? The Iditarod live on the Sports Channel? Or, like Keruvalia (IIRC), that one opera that hasn't been put on stage for decades?

I am pretty big on the local film festivals.......Sundance is king though (and it's not exactly local... :()

however, my yearly "must-do" actually is the local-ish Trek convention.

It used to be different things at different times-

When I was a kid it was Dundracon. I'll just leave my lunch money on this counter...

For a while it was whenever the Daddies (Cherry Poppin' Daddies) where in town (or Branford Marsalis, who I saw three times in one week once, or The Dirty Dozen Brass Band, and it's still Pink Floyd only because that doesn't happen all that often).

The Monterey Historic Automobile Races are up there, fortunately as of late I get paid for that nonsense.

One day in my life I'm going to go to the 24hrs of Le Mans. One day...

I don't know. I don't have a good one. I live in the city now, so I could do the same thing with the San Francisco International Film Festival.

I really should actually.

What's that!? the world's largest, and possibly most famous, arts festival! (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edinburgh_Fringe_Festival) it's awesome, there's everything - comedy, theatre, circuses, music, dance, street performances etc. etc., and there's the associated film festival (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edinburgh_Film_Festival)(longest continually running in the world) and book festival (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edinburgh_Book_Festival). i mostly go for the comedy but my friends usually drag me along to a few theatre productions, to make me more cultured or something, and i'm frequently pleasantly suprised. i've yet to make it to the book festival although i've heard it's pretty good.

07-02-2007, 00:29
Okay, so it's geeky. But what is it?
A role-playing convention, if you expand the name it make more sense-DungeonsandDragonscon.

And I fucked up, that's not the one we went to, that's the one I filmed years later. I think the one I went to was...yeah, it was called Pacificon.

Is that actually an uninterrupted 24 hours? *has no clue about car races*
And would you have to stay up for the whole time watching? Is it on a round track? Isn't that mindnumbingly boring? ;p
Yep, 24 straight hours (didn't we talk about this when the Daytona 24hrs was on? And Nadkor said she couldn't watch on tv?) There are 4 drivers per car, but the car itself runs flat 24hrs. It's amazing. There are four classes on the field, Le Mans Prototypes which are the least restricted and have been an all Audi show for a while (in the 80s it was almost an all Porsche show). This year there will be a Peugot diesel to fight the Audi diesel.

Then there is the Le Mans Prototype 675s, which are smaller. Last year Porsche returned to La Sarthe (what they call the track) with its RS Spyder and now it's a customer car and they have a factory one they're hoping to get an overall win with.

Then there is GTS class (they keep changing the name, so whatever it's called now) which has modified street cars. They have to have a certain set of things in common with the production vehicle. That's been a Corvette show for a while now, surprisingly. Ferrari tried and couldn't match the 'Vettes reliability (weird I know...) and now neither can the Aston Martins. It's been a good fight over the years. The previous dominant car in that class was the Viper. So for all the shit American car companies (deservedly) get, they put it out on the track. You got something to say? Put it on the track...

And then there is GT, where the cars are even closer to the street version. That's been a Porsche show for freakin' ever.

All on the track at the same time. It's beautiful. I would do my damnedest to stay up the whole time.

There is an amiture 25 hour race near me that I keep meaning to see. Porsches keep winning that, too.

Spell checks aren't helping me with that word so I'm leaving it.

My alma mater hosts a semi-annual contest in which people stay up from midnight to 8 AM competing to see who can score the most points on challenges such as "Identify the movies from which these screenshots of people yelling 'NO!' were taken," "Identify these TV theme songs from the first letters of each word in them," or "Perform a piece of Harry Potter porn." It is so deeply and peculiarly entertaining that many alumni will come back to campus to play for years (or, in quite a few cases, decades) after they graduate. I haven't missed a contest yet, although my financial situation has forced me to play long-distance a few times.

s.y.r.c.l.'s wild and scenic film festival held every year in the grass valley/nevada city area of northern california, which i haven't been to yet.

there's also the celtic festival held at the grass valley fairgrounds in october.

the one that wifie and i do manage to make it to almost every year is furcon, held in san jose in january. although i'm thinking seriously that the next con i go to will be baycon which is held arround my birthday which falls very close to memorial day, also in the (san francisco) bay area.

then of course there are any number of jam band festivals held in my sureal nervana mountains. there's a big one now a days in quincy.

i haven't been to any of these yet either. there is a summer series of free concerts in my town's park, with occasionaly half-way decent or better bands. we had mumbo gumbo one year. the're local, semi-ecclectic, mostly zydico.

i'm afraid i'm a bit less into the big deals of any kind then the real gratifcation i get from simply creating, however humbly and imperfectly, and exploring on my own.

media "must see" hype is generaly a pretty gratutious "con", but then, as you say, there ARE some goodies. these are generaly the genre conventions put on by the fans of those genres themselves. i really feel these are the best "events", where people, not corprotocracy or big media or even chambers of commerce, get togather to plan and arrainge, book venue and guests and so on, on a local or at most, regeonal, level.
