Remember the superbowl snickers commercial?

Remember the commercial with the two guys accidentally kissing over a snickers bar? The gays are up in arms about it. I can't decide wheather they have a point or they're overreacting. On one hand, one of the alternate endings to the commercial was one guy beating the other guy with a wrench, which could be seen as promoting violence against gays. On the other hand, the other alternate endings don't seem to be promoting violence and the reations of the football players to the commercial seems normal.

They were two straight guys kissing. So it's not manly for two STRAIGHT guys to kiss. Which is why they had to do something manly. Of course, if you think ripping off chest hair is manly...well then...

I love the fact that it's compared to promoting the same kind of hate that led to Matt shepherd's death...it's hardly virulently homophobic...

actually, the point was "quick, do something manly" and the two of em do something stupid. I.e. Ripping out chest hair, drinking oil and antifreeze, hitting one in the gut with a wrench while the other slams the hood down on the otherman's head...

It doesn't promote violence, it equates Manliness with stupidity.

The commercial is in bad taste. I'm not saying it should've been pulled, but the questions raised are definitely legitimate.

that's a good point, but i very much doubt anyone else would pick up on that or that the makers of the advert intended that.

Political correctness is very similar to the restrictions on speech imposed by a dictator. Humor is a form of entertainment and political commentary and should be free from such ridiculous scrutiny that results in such comments.

The reason that these issues still exist is because of our unwillingness to speak about them cordially. We forbid people from joking about gays, blacks, jews, or any other marginalized group unless they are a member of that group. This only promotes more negativity.

Think about things that have happened in your own life that upset you. My best friends and I make fun of each other when we get upset - eventually you'll chuckle about the things that hurt you most. Joking about things that hurt takes away the power they have over us. As long as we have people crying wolf over the most insignificant and light-hearted jokes, we will never progress socially.

Wow. I didn't even see it, obviously, but just after reading the linked article I'm going to be the party pooper and say I would have been outraged, too.

I cannot fathom how such an ad could find its way from the desk of an ad company serf through dozens of hands and executive offices onto TV without the thought that it's oh-so-nonchalantly offensive ever even crossing anybody's mind.

I didn't mind the version that aired too very much, but I think the alternate ending involving hitting people with wrenches absolutely crosses the line. Recording NFL players recoiling in horror from the man-smooching is also colossally stupid and offensive (and illogical, to boot - you'd think a bunch of guys who spend their time jumping on top of each other and have frequently been known to engage in mutual spankings wouldn't mind the idea of hetero guys engaging in somewhat "gay" activities).

There is absolutely nothing funny about Snickers. Not only does it cause obesity and raise the risk of diabetes it also can turn people gay. This is no laughing matter. The children need to be protected from this stuff.

Ok, is it me or are people actually starting to go out of their way to be angry at something, I mean my God! I've watched this commercial and the last thing I would've ever thought was "Gays = beat them up!" I mean Jesus Christ on a Bicycle! Now if they showed two guys eating Snickers, and then going to Castro Street in San Fransisco and beating up gays, then I would understand the outrage, but here, it's just unwarranted and the group is seeing a message in the commercial that isn't there.

Bottom line people, Lighten the fuck up!

I didn't watch the Superbowl, but when the controversy started I watched it on YouTube. I thought it was homophobic, if mildly so. You're supposed to laugh at the two men... but you're also supposed to identify with them on some level. That's part of the humor, and the marketing.

That's how I took it, anyway. The joke was hardly funny, though, so even if it wasn't homophobic, it was still a rather stupid ad.

I didn't find the ad particularly funny but I hardly saw it as offensive. You see the same sort of humor on sitcoms quite often and I don't hear people bitching about it. You know that it is mostly the media, seeing potential controversy and so they stir up trouble hoping to milk the story for all its worth. It really doesn't matter what kind of joke you make, SOMEONE out there will probably become offended. Simply the way it is. Snickers should have spit in the eye of any who have decided to whine about nothing and continued to run the ad.

Perhaps. Maybe I don't listen to enough talk radio and the like. But it is the Snickers commercial that I have noticed a particularly signifigant amount of time spent this "controversy". Keeping a story alive about an unimpressive commercial that should just be forgotten.

Well, I can understand some groups issuing statements of protest but I was saying that the pure media circus that this particualar commercial has produced is seriously more talked about then any past occurance. Perhaps because it was during such a highly watched event that has kept things alive but I still believe it is the media more than anything else that keeps people talking about it. Similar instances in the past might get a 15 second sound bite but this...

Speaking as a gay guy.. No, I wouldn't. It wouldn't sexually excite me, and it might be a little bit embarrassing (I'm naturally bashful). The only awkward part about it would be that I accidentally did something potentially intimate with someone that wasn't my significant other. We'd probably laugh and apologize, but I'd certainly not feel the need to reaffirm my sexuality, nor would the act of accidentally kissing a woman make me "feel straight."

Now wait just a damn minute. All the traditionalists in my country have been saying for years that real women don't suck cock, because real women would never dream of engaging in "recreational" sex of any kind. Only sluts and whores and liberals engage in oral sex. To be a real woman, they tell me, I am supposed to never have any kind of sexual contact at all, other than lying passively under my lawful husband while he pumps away and I stare at the ceiling thinking about doing the dishes.

Nope, nope, see that's the problem right there. Grocery lists lead to impure thoughts about using vegetables in Non-Jesus-Approved ways. Better for the man to make up a list for me, so that my corrupt, sinful female brain does not lead me into wickedness in the produce isle.

I really hate to break it to all the closet-cases but...yes, we can. Especially the hyper-manly ones. The more closeted you think you are, the easier it is for everybody else to tell.

And even when you can't tell if they're gay or not, you certainly can tell that they suck in bed. Hyper-masculinity and lousy sex skills go together like a lime and a coconut. Frankly, I'd rather sleep with an OUT gay boy than a closet case.
