Wait a few hours, it's something like 5 or 6 AM in NZ. They'll be on to talk about it later today, doubtless.

Waitangi Day commemorates the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840, by which the British annexed New Zealand with the consent of (some) Maori chiefs. The Treaty is very important still today because it guaranteed essential rights to Maori, including the right of ownership of their lands (communal or individual), and full rights as British subjects.
You can read the text here (http://www.nzhistory.net.nz/politics/treaty/read-the-treaty/english-text). It's quite short.

whoot!
I spent Waitangi Day by having a bonk, a nice leisurely breakfast and then went shopping for presents for people when I go back to NZ next week. Also had lunch at a great Shanghainese restaurant and ended the day with my g/f giving me a back massage.
All in all, a pretty damn good way to spend one's national day of celebration.

Over-simplifying, perhaps (Fijian traditional rights were a lot better protected than those of the Maori, for example; but then European colonists in Fiji never outnumbered ethnic Fijians) but essentially a fair point, yes.

Considering the problems that has caused Fiji over the years, one could argue that it wasn't that good an idea.
Considering the problems that has caused Fiji over the years, one could argue that it wasn't that good an idea.
The problem in Fiji wasn't the fact that the British colonial authorities "protected" the Fijians from the settlers (in a paternalistic but well-intentioned way). The problem was that the British brought in massive numbers of Indian plantation workers (because Fijians, understandably, didn't fancy working for the settlers in their own country), until almost half the population was Indian, and then segregated the Fijians from the Indians, making no attempt to create a sense of shared national belonging. As a result, Fijian society maintained extreme ethnic polarisation, which was the direct cause of the two coups of 1987 and the 2000 coup, and a partial and indirect cause for the 2006 coup.
Incidentally, the first British governors in Fiji had in mind what had happened to the Maori in NZ, and their explicit goal was to make sure the same thing wouldn't happen in Fiji.
How is your sister Maori if you (I assume) are not?
Because we have the same mother, and her father is Maori, where-as mine is not.

Complaints about the Union Jack on the flag.
Complaints about the Flag not being the Maori flag.
Complaints about the Maori flag not being allowed up on the Auckland Harbour Bridge.
Old man on Talkback radio suggested the National day should be in September because New Zealand became a nation and/or no longer a Dominion on the 9th of September or something...
Also doesn't like Union Jack or Southern Cross.
The Navy band had to retreat from Treaty house Parade ground after a fierce assualt from the rain.
As for positive things...
Big festival in Porirua(North of Wellington) and it was Bob Marley's birthday or something.
But no real Nationalism.

Well, I'm planning on getting down to Turangi, but not Waiouru. I'm only there for 10 days and my parents live in Kaitaia, so it's just not enough time to get everywhere.
My plan is:
Auckland for 2 nights (Piha & Muriwai)
Then Raglan, the Mount, Rotorua, Turangi (a mate has a bach there) for a couple of nights, then head up to Whangarei for Oceans Beach and Tutukaka then finally Mangonui - Matai Bay - Kaitaia and Shippies/Ninety Mile. On the way down Rawene, Opo, Waipoua forest and Kaipara Harbour.
Care to guess what we might be doing a lot of?

It actually was, once. It was legally under the jurisdiction of New South Wales, very briefly.
It's generally a sporting based rivalry anyway.
I was on a Qantas flight from Sydney to Auckland a few hours before Australia played New Zealand in the last Rugby World Cup. As we were coming in to land, the captain wished everyone a pleasant stay, and concluded with:
"Commiserations in advance to any All Black fans back there." :D
I think we'd both prefer to remain separate.
I think you are correct.
I wouldn't say hate. It's a fierce rivalry, but for the most part it's friendly enough.
And again, I agree. To me it's kind of akin to siblings, we can hassle the Aussies, call them names, make them the punch lines of our jokes and give them a bit of hard time just as they can to us and no one really takes it askance. But were some third country to try the same antics with either of us, that'd just be rude.:D
Further (as kind of indicated by an earlier poster), when NZers and Aussies meet up outside of NZ and Oz, it's more like long lost siblings reuniting than genuine rivals crossing paths.
There was, however, a New Zealand Prime Minister (I forget which) who said that New Zealanders emigrating to Australia were a good thing, because they raised both countries' IQs.
Friendly rivalry? :D

He most probably has the lowest half-century-century coversion rate in internationl cricket but he is out of form and needed time at the crease.
Yes he had a few quiet spots in his innings but really it was those around hi that ballsed up, but yeah i agree i had a bad feeling about his progress.
