What if... (Alternate History)

What if Harry Truman had decided to do an amphibious invasion of Japan instead of using the Atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki?

My idea:

Obviously, most of Japan's population would probably be killed due to the samurai mentality. A large number of our troops would be killed too.

The whole incident with the American couple selling nuclear secrets to the Russians would never have gotten out, and atomic technology would probably have been long forgotten. Due to the delayed defeat of Japan, the Soviet Union would've attacked more Japanese possessions, and therefore Communism would've had more of a spread in Asia, probably ending up having the whole of Korea communist, and with the communists in China China would've become Communist much faster. Taiwan would've never been formed. Japan would probably be non-existant, due to the fact that most of their population would've either harikiried or died in battle, so it would probably be taken over by Chinese communist immigrants. The Americans would begin secret operations against the communists. Since the communists don't have to worry about nuclear war, they would've been much more inclined to invasion, and would probably take over as much of Asia as possible. They would leave the Phillipines alone for now, not wishing for an open war with America until they are ready. Not needing to worry about nuclear Britian either, they would pop off a few European countries, namely Scandinavia and maybe Greece. When Russia finally invades India, Britian declares war. Most of western Europe goes with, but they only serve to delay until the Americans can mobilize. The Middle East, which would probably be largely pro-Soviet, helps in attacking India. The Americans and the Australians launch a joint attack through South East Asia, and provide reinforcements to India. In the mean time, Africa sits back and enjoys the show. The South American communists would attempt, and utterly fail at attacking the south end of America, but it takes enough troops to delay the Americans in Asia and Europe. By this point the communists have probably gotten to about Hyderabad in India, and are probably quickly approaching Paris, with the British and French forces quickly dwindling. Oceania is probably falling quickly, with the Soviets taking over a large majority of the islands. Mean while, the Africans are still sitting back and watching the show. South and Central America quickly falls to American military might, as the Soviets cannot reinforce someone who is half a world away. However, there are plenty of freedom fighters who actively resist American occupation. The Soviets now attempt a two pronged attack via the NORTH North Atlantic. Taking Svalbard and Iceland, they attack Greenland and Alaska, causing the first land fighting on American soil in the 21st century. The Alaskan regiments, positioned there specifically for the event of a Soviet attack through Siberia, are able to put up quite a good fight. Greenland easily falls, and the Soviets begin an island campaign in Northern Canada. The Canadians, who have focused most of their troops in Europe, never expected an attack through the Arctic territories, and quickly lose their Northern area. The Alaskan regiments attempt to reinforce the Canadians, but this only results in both parts collapsing under the Soviets. Africa is still sitting back and watching the show. India is probably still resisiting, with it being an almost Vietnam-esque war. By now France is probably totally under Soviet control, of course still with resistors. The Soviets now plan the amphibious invasion of Britian. With most British troops either killed or captured in France, Britian falls easily. Now the entirety of Europe is under Soviet military domination. They experience little to no resistance in most of Asia (Besides India). The Philippinos gracefully accept the Soviets over the Americans, so there is little resistance even there. In some parts of South America the Americans have simply pulled out their troops due to the amount of resistance. The Middle East is pro-Soviet, so there is nothing to worry about there. Yes, the Africans are still sitting back and watching. Canada is mostly under Soviet control, but the more populated areas are able to resist more throughly, so that the Eastern parts are able to keep the Soviets back for some time. The Soviets attempt to cross the border in the midwest and the western coastal regions, where America is least densely populated. Australia is able to resist, but only for so long. Resistors there continue to fight even after the government has collapsed. Now in more of a position to support their South American allies, the Soviets send troops and supplies to the Caribbean and South America. The South Americans easily push the Americans back up the Central America, the the Caribbeans easily push them back to Florida. America keeps a tight grip on Central America, hoping for a buffer zone between them and South America. Africans still sitting back. The South Americans go for Central America, and there is tightly packed fighting between Americans and the South Americans, with little movement. India finally falls around now, but with large numbers of resistance movements. The Soviets make their way across the heartland of America, along with attacking the more populated areas of Canada in order to get a way into the Great Lakes. They attack Michigan and the surrounding areas through the Great Lakes, but experience a large number of resistance movements. There are, though, a number of American communist supporters, or people who just want the war to end rather than having to fight against odds which are obviously against them. Due to the much rather larger number of anti-Communist Americans, these are mostly eliminated. Yep, Africa is STILL sitting back. They attack Florida through the Carribean, and quickly take the penninsula. The South Americans advance to the Yucatan, but are still experiencing heavy resistance. The Central Americans are resisting the American occuption, causing annoyances to the troops trying to keep the South Americans out. The Soviets quickly take the Western states, and use the docks to help reinforce. Note that wherever the Communists have taken over, there are resistors. The Soviets try to break out of Florida, but are consistenly stopped. They also try to attack New England, but are also consistenly stopped. Eventually the troops in Central America are recalled to defend the homeland, and Central America falls to Soviet domination. With the new front open, the South Americans attack through Mexico, and soon enough the western half of the United States is under Soviet domination. They quickly advance Eastward, and eventually the South Eastern states are conquered. Now with only New England left, all the troops and patriotic Americans decide to make a last stand at the beacon of what is America, New York. Resistors occasionally spring up in Red Dawn fashion, and occasionally they do make a mark. But with the rest of the world (Besides Africa) dominated by the Soviets, it really doesn't matter. The Soviets eventually reach New York, and the invasion is esque to the American invasion of Japan. People fight the Soviets with whatever they can find. Sticks, stones, bricks, home untensils, everything. Eventually New York falls, but only after the Soviets experience more casualities than the Americans did in invading Japan. The Soviets now turn to Africa, which they feel will be an easy target. However, without their knowledge, the Africans have united. The Soviets attempt to appeal to the Muslim population as they did in the Middle East, but little success is gained. The African unity stands strong, and the Africans are able to resist most of the invasion attempts by the Soviets. Hearing of these resistors in Africa, resistors in Western or anti-Soviet countries are emboldened, and highten their attacks. India, with their large population and utter hate of foreign occupiers, are even able to kick out the Soviets from the southern region and Sri Lanka. The Pakistani area, sharing the same sentiments, break off from their pro-Sovietness and openly resist the Soviets as well. The nationalists in China, who are led by the suprinsingly still alive Kai-Ching Shek, attempt a coup and are able to liberate the larger cities of China from Soviet control. Australia, which has very few occupying troops, are easily able to break off from Soviet dominance, and is the first country to regain full control of all their lands. The Canadians, who have a large resistance movement HQed in the more desolate regions of Canada, march on the Ontario and Quebec areas, and engage in open combat with the Soviets. The Americans, who have always been big resistors, take back a few major cities, namely New York and Los Angeles. They are unable to take back a lot, though, due to the fact that the Soviets realized America would be their biggest problem in resistance, and are simply unable to combat the large number of Soviet troops. Facist revolutionaries in South America stage a few coups, but only a few, note that these were highly successful, are able to work due to the high pro-Soviet presence in the South Americas. The Baath party, which was always one for Arab nationalism, enrages the Middle Easterners one way or another, and Middle Eastern territories, namely present-day Iraq, Saudi Arabia and Iran are able to stage successful coups against the Soviets. Turkey is ardent in their support, and assists the Soviets in attempt to quel the resistors, but this emboldens the Arabs to attack and take over Turkey. The British and Irish kick the Soviets off their isles thanks to extreme nationalist sentiments brewing in those areas. The Indians are able to slowly advance back up, and eventually link up with the Pakistanis and the Middle Easterners, and advance on the Kazakhstan and western China areas, hoping to reach the southern flank of Russia and hit the communist international at it's heart. The Australians proceed to launch a campaign on Oceania, hoping to attempt to spread the Soviets thin. The Facist governments in South America unite to kick the communists out, and are able to do so expect in the incredibly highly Soviet supportive regions. Cuba leads the Carribeans against the communists, kicking them out of most of the islands. A Facist coup takes over Mexico and most of Central America, giving some breathing room for the Americans in the South since now the Soviets have to go to the Central and South Americas to try to keep them under Soviet domination. France is able to break off with the assistance of the British, and they proceed to join with the Africans (Who are now a world power) in an attack on Spain, Italy, and the Balkans, along with the western Middle Easterners. The Australians have managed to take over much of Oceania, and are getting ready to launch a mainland invasion on Asia. The Middle Easterners attack Russia through the Caspian Sea, along through Georgia. All Russian troops are now recalled to defend Russia, leaving pro-Soviet nations to defend themselves, and leaving anti-Soviet governments to take back control. Australia attacks China, Russia's biggest ally in this war, along with India and the Eastern Middle Easterners. The large number of Chinese prove hard to defeat, but with nationalists constantly revolting, it is hard for the Chinese to keep on all fronts. America and Canada attack Russia through Siberia, giving them a taste of their own medicine. The Scandinavians attack through Finland, but this is more symbolic as to say "We're in it too", since Scandinavia has very few troops. Since Eastern Europe is actually largely Soviet, it proves a buffer zone for Britian, France, and the African Union. Eventually they break through, but end up suffering a Russian Winter, and are forced to delay their attacks until later. The Middle Easterners are able to take over much of the southern parts of Russia, and are even able to attack China from the North to assist Australia and India. For now a Russian Winter has set in, so they can't go much further North. Same happens with the Canadians and the Americans. However, in Russia there is now growing hatred towards the Communists, as was before the October Revolution. America and Canada attack Japan and Korea, both of which are quickly taken. China now falls under a multiple-front invasion, along with the many revolts amongst the nationalists. Russia is now alone, as was America when the Russians were on the offensive. When the Russian Winter is over, there is a multi-pronged attack on Russia. The alliance comes upon quite a suprising site. All of the Russians are welcoming them with open arms. Apparently over the winter there had been a revolution, and ironically the Communist government was disposed by that revolution.

And that's about the time of where we are now...

So Australia and Africa end up being two world superpowers, with Africa being, suprisingly enough, largely a Republic. However, it is split into two, the Muslim African Union (North) and the United Republic of Africa (South). They have tensions, but are still united by African heritage. South and Central America is largely Facist, which proves quite the antagonist for the now newly wholely democratic United States of North America. Canada decided to join with the states. Germany, which is simply tired of war, enters into a state of local depression. The Middle East is taken under the wing of a new Arabian kingdom, consisting of the western Middle East, along with Iran and Egypt. India becomes democratic, and takes in Pakistan, Afghanistan, Nepal, and part of Southern China. The South Eastern Asians unite in order to resist the Indians, whom they feel are attempting to take them over. China becomes authoritarianly nationalist, and also becomes isolationist. It's size is substanially decreased. Think of taking out the northern most part of it, along with the western half, and some of the southern parts of it, and you have what it essentially becomes. Oceania (Besides Australia) unites into the Oceaniac Union. Japan is deserted, and slowly becomes overgrown with animals and nature. Russia, who has lost their eastern land to the Ural mountians, along with the area near Finland, along with the area bordering the Black and Caspian sea, becomes democratic, but is regarded with much suspicion by all countries. Siberia is made into a new state, under the control of the natives there. Most of Europe now has become Authoritarian, forgetting the mistakes before World War II, but hoping that the militarists will help them defend against any other attacks like this. Most of these states also become isolationist. Turkey loses their European holdings, and are allowed to rule themselves however, which results in Turkey becoming almost Anarchiacal. The Arctic states become democratic, and form a union. Surely enough there are supporters of the previous Soviet domination, but due to paranoia about such a thing as complete Soviet domination ever happening again, most Socialists are put down quickly. Also, there are any number of smaller states around the world, namely where land of the aggressors was lost.

Possible wars brewing in this new society:

Muslim Africa VS Republic Africa.

Australia VS Oceania.

North America VS Latin America.

Any number of authoritarian states in Europe fighting amongst each other.

India VS South Eastern Asian Union

And if any of you ask how my story is possible, you must remember. The ONLY thing stopping Russia from attacking the West after WWII was their fear of the atom bomb and nuclear war. If that wasn't there, I do believe something along the lines of my too-long-of-a-story could happen.

And they got to Japan by swiming?

Actually I would say that stopped the USSR from attacking right after WWII was the loss of quite a number of people + destruction of a great deal of their infastructure. It took a bit to bounce back from that.

I find my energy is much better spent on spending... I think it was an hour? Maybe thirty minutes? Of writing theoretical, non-paragraphical, and non-factual possible outcomes for Earth.

The Soviet Union was economically and technologically incapable of fighting a war against the United States in 1945. We controlled half of the world's industrial production, had no war damage, had highly productive agriculture and energy sources, and suffered no civilian losses. Our military was experienced, well equipped, technologically advanced, and we had a lot of manpower still to draw upon. The Soviet Union was still reeling not only from the destruction under Stalin and collectivization, but also the imbalances produced in the crash industrialization of the 1930's. I mean, they lost easily a quarter of their GDP and over 30 million people, not to mention they had to occupy and control their occupied zones, all of which were not supportive of the Soviet occupation.

If they tried it, they would have collapsed and the Union would have dissolved by the end of the 1940's; they could not support their armed forces with the kind of resources they had at the end of the war. We would have been in Moscow by no later than 1947.

I'll say two things about this topic.
1) At least you got replies.
2) Harry Truman was a cock.

expand the time frame, dont think the japanese would all cap them selves and it might work. providing no one ever tried to come up with nuclear weapons.
The one thing about the soviets is by the 60 they had enough firepower to over run europe and the allegences af many eatern european countries, asia was starting to go communist on its own so europe would have been there first target. secondly i highly doubt they would be stupid enough to spread their forces so thin that as soon as they've taken over the world they'd let it rebel and lose the whole thing again. but a fun read non the less
