Prom Dilemma

Well, it's prom in a few months, and I don't have a date. But I was actually pretty okay with that, since I've got a few great friends who are going too, and I thought I'd just plan to go stag, and see how things go with my stupid manbeast (the guy I like), who is in a different grade (yay for cougars!), so he won't be at prom unless somebody takes him. But now one of my best friends has come up with a proposition for me. Her boyfriend has a best friend who lives in Van, and he really, really, really wants him to be their for our prom. And you can't get into prom at my school unless you go there, or....have a date. So now my friend is begging me to take this random stranger with me to prom, and I don't want to let her down, 'cause I know how much this means for her boyfriend, but having a blind date for prom kinda throws a wrench in my plans.
Well, wisefolk of NSG, what would you do? (World's worst poll coming soon).

maybe you could meet him before prom......if you like him take him, if not let him tag along anyway, and make sure everyone knows that it's a "favor" to your friend and that he isn't your date.

Hey! I get to be the first person to vote "Ask your manbeast, moron!"

Although your relationship might have a problem if you keep referring to him as your manbeast. Hope he's into bondage.

Before Steel Butterflies starts complaining about this thread as well, let me tell you what I think:
You really need to do what you think is best and most enjoyable for you. If you believe that you'll have more fun with your manbeast, take him.
I wouldn't want to have a complete stranger show up and then sort of ruin my prom.
How about you tell your friends that y'all'd have to meet up some time before the prom so you have the chance to actually meet this guy beforehand. And by that I don't mean 2 hours before the festivities get started!
If he's a nice fellow and the two of you get along, I don't see a reason why not to take him with you to the prom.
If, on the other hand, he's an idiot, well, wouldn't it be better to find that out beforehand? I'd think so.

Yet they often end in sex. It's like drawn out prostitution with someone you like.

Make him pay--both for the prom and all the little associated expenses, and for the privilege of going as your man-servant. You should humiliate him and your friend's boyfriend at the prom as well. ;)

All I know about my "prom" (we call it a formal) is that I went single with a group of friends who were also single, ate our dinner, had a good laugh, had a few drinks, and spent the rest of the night getting stoned in the car park..

As a result, I don't remember much other than the fact that I seemed to have had a better night than the people who went with dates.

anyway

think about it for a while. if you dont want to ask a boy yourself and you dont think that you will get asked by anyone you would want to go with, do your friend the favor.

wait until its less than a month before prom though. things change. you might want that ticket for your own date.

Hmm. I thought that was marriage.

But more seriously, I went to prom with a group of friends and a blind date (who ended up being very nice and attractive). Unfortunately, she wasn't much for dancing while I love it, so I ended up not spending most of my time with her, though I did try to make sure she was enjoying the evening.

So just go with the guy, but don't feel obligated to attach yourself to him like a suction cup. Enjoy the party and do whatever you want instead of worrying about taking care of your date.

not that there is anything wrong with that.

my brother in law, soon to turn 64, is fond of pointing out that the prom is the perfect opportunity to get laid. not AT the prom, not AFTER the prom, but one week before when you let the girl who is a prom-fanatic know that if she refuses your request she wont have a date.

probably worked better in 1962 than it does today.

Because my dad's car was in Germany and the prom took place in the U.S.!!!

Besides, I didn't have my driver's license yet when I was in the States.

Wait a little while to see how things go between you and the guy you like. If there is something there between you..then ask him. If he says "no" then go with the friend. It's not like it will be an official "date" if you set the boundaries. This is YOUR night, not somebody else's so if your friend's boyfriend gets upset if you go with the guy you like-screw him. But ask the guy you like first because if you don't you will most likely regret not knowing what his answer might have been.

No, I'm not a prep. I don't fit in at school; I have a few friends, but the popular girls don't care about me. I'm a theatre kid, I do well in my classes, I read books by the Dickens and plays by Wilde. In other words, I'm a "weirdo", in the eyes of the world. And I'm also pretty far from retarded, considering I had the highest or second highest mark in all my classes last semester, have one several awards for English, and am generally well-known for my intelligence. But I am blonde; I guess you got that right.

Erm my assumptions were based on your "valley girl" grammar and tone in your intitial post... You sure don't come off as the "misunderstood genius" mate. I didn't say everyone who goes too prom is an airhead.... I take it you also have an award in english for constructing strawmen?

It's the f.cking internet, not a formal essay. I took on a casual tone to reflect the fact that it was a casual question. I don't write poetry and papers like that. And, no, the english award is not for strawmen; I'm pretty sure my school doesn't offer awards for people who excel in logical fallacies. The two awards I have recieved were both for being the top student in English in my grade, two years in a row. And if I don't come off as a "misunderstood genius", it's because I'm not claiming to be one. There's quite a gap between genius and "semi-retarded." I actually do have full brain function, believe it or not, I'm just not enough of a prick to think I always have to write like an English major who reads the dictionary before bed. Sometimes I just want to feel like a goddamn teenager.

Ah I see. You see my impecible british-esque manner of writing something that is attributed too a "prick". Your school may not award logical inconsistent fallcies, but I myself will gladly give credit where its due. :p

Not only do you not try too write poetically, or with formal grace, you successfully shit on modern language, then recycle it with a "preppy-esque valley girl" tone.

And people who avoid doing things to avoid being a "conformist" suck. If you want to do something, do it whether everyone's doing it or nobody is.

At any rate, there's no harm in taking the guy just so he can get in, just make sure that your friend is aware that she owes you one (as does her boyfriend).

You know what, I don't care if this is flaming: f.ck you. I am a poet and a talented writer, and I have value as a person. I'm not always perfectly eloquent online, but nobody is. You, in fact, are not that fabulous yourself. I've seen several flaws in the posts you've made. Don't pretend like you're better than me. That's just being conceited. You know nothing about me, beyond what I've said in a few posts, and that is very little. Don't you dare judge me. I didn't make this thread so that people I don't even know could attack me and my life choices. I'm not a valley girl, I'm not a prep, I don't consider myself "semi-retarded." I don't know what the hell your problem is with me, but perhaps you could consider keeping your narrow-minded and completely unfouded opinions to yourself.

Proms are a waste of time and money, IMO.

Yeah, I agree.

(my school had a "debutante ball", which was essentially our prom, but also a seperate formal. I went to the latter, since it didn't involve dancing. we got drunk in the toilets and I was out the front smoking when I won the "most likely to end up in jail" award. High school was fun.)

Translation: No, I can't get a date. :(

Hey, I resent that!

I could have gotten a date. There was this one girl who was so desperate that she asked all the guys in the school. I mean, she had to be desperate if she asked my group of friends, since we were the uber-social outcasts that nobody wanted to go out with. She did get a date in the end so everyone was happy.
