Pool Shock and Brake Fluid

Supposedly, when a non-silicone brake fluid containing polyethelyne glycol is mixed with pool shock cleaner that contains calcium hypochlorite, the result is a chemical reaction that gets hot and flares up. I've heard that park rangers use this to start camp fires in wet conditions. Is this true? I can't make it work.

I have mixed "Sun-burn extra" (47% Calcium Hypochlorite by volume)granulated shock treatment with "Super-Tech" brake fluid (containing polyglycols) together with no result. The video of this that I have found use very large amounts to obtain results.

Can someone tell me what I am doing wrong?

Probably not the best place to ask how to build semi-legal incendiary devices.

I shall watch the Atlanta news for "Teenager Burns House Down". Pretty fires are nice but seriously, find a less dangerous hobby, okay?

One would assume so, or at the very least work with someone who would.

Still, those were very pretty flames in the video, don't you think?

suggest it to mythbusters, then they can not only prove or debunk it, but actually find out what chemicals will produce your desired results.

Supposedly, when a 55 gallon drum of fertilizer is soaked in diesel fuel, the result is an unstable chemical reactant that can be used for structural demolition. I've heard that Texans use this to clear underbrush from their yards, and Alabamans use it for pond fishing. Is it true? I can't make it work.

I can make this work in a lab with similar reactants, but I cannot make it work with anything I get from local stores. If anybody has made this work, I would like to know what brands of product they used. Please tell me! or I will be forced to spend more time figuring this out for myself.

Err...do you not actually watch the show? Anytime they mess with something like that, they intentionally leave out essential parts to the process for making them so that people don't go off trying it and hurting themselves, or using fake fingerprints to break into places, like in that one episode.

They occasionally disappoint me. For instance Gunpowder Engine and painting with dynamite.

Gunpowder engines exist, in fact they've used them on a show dozens of times. Probably they don't realize it, but none the less. Guns, they're gunpowder engines. Instead of propelling a piston they're moving a bullet. Same principle though. Material moves into the reaction chamber, ignites, causes a physical motion due to expansion, and vents the exhaust. A modified gun, or more likely several could operate as an engine very easily.

Painting with dynamite was just sloppy. Jamie used too much duck tape on his device, which created huge voids. If he'd used thinner tape it would of worked vastly better.

I don't remember if they edited out steps in making thermite for their Hindenberg myth or not.

Thermite is a really, really simple process. I learned it in high school. Boil iron oxide in concentrated acid and drop in a piece of aluminum foil. You can buy the ingredients anywhere.

My personal favorite, though, is sodium perchlorate and sulfuric acid. Easy to do and dramatic. If you just use small quantities and take reasonable precautions, it's perfectly safe.
