I got a Cricket at the gas station earlier and am loving it. Much better than the Bics I had been using. So easy to light and no nasty residue on my thumb.

I've never had a problem with Bics, myself...

I always rip off the safety so when I light one I get black crap on my thumb.

They suck at opening beers, and are much worse in windy conditions.

You shouldn't take the safety off...they don't last as long when you do.

Without Bic, you don't have the lighter of doom.

Thankfully I have suffient bulk that I only need to turn my back to the wind to take care of that. And I can open a beer with my teeth or stomach thank you very much.

Really? They always quit working on me when I keep it on. But when I take it off they start working again. Odd.

I love doing that with the cheap dollar store lighters my friends get and not telling them. :)

Ours are pretty much all kiddy safe now, hence they suck.

So they are all empty and in safes?

And yet you complain about the black crap; ever thought about the cause before you whine about the product. ;)

I tend to go for the Bic's. They last longer.

GV didn't appear to be complaining so much as making an observation. Nice.

I prefer the http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y223/GermanNightmare/bic_logo.jpg lighters, although I usually have all different kinds around. Ours don't even have that stupid safety to begin with, for which I'm really grateful, since they get on my nerves.

It's called a "match." It's small and very portable; it usually comes in a box or what is called a "book" form. It can be made of cardboard (book form) or wood (box). They range in length from 1 1/2" (book form) to 8"-9" (fireplace lighter model). On one end they have a colored blob, usually red or blue. This is the end that burns. On the box or book there is a dark strip of rough material. You draw the blob end of the stick across that strip quickly. It will usually light. You can use one to light two or three of whatever you want to light. Once used, you dispose of the stick, it's biodegradable so that's not an issue. It's drawbacks are that you need to avoid moisture or they become inoperable. There are also some safety issues where children and idiots are concerned.

there is no such thing as a "good" disposable anything.

(although i aggree about the sticks with the blob of phosphates on one end of them. since like everything in nature they can and do recycle. and of course there are ALWAYS "safety issues where children and idiots are concerned" (and unfortunately that are none of us who aren't idiots some of the time and under some conditions)).
