This is just a solution in search of a problem, with the side effect of being a malicious slap in the face. I don't recall any immigrants asking permission to stone their women.

How'd you like it if your town was accepting immigrants as citizens even though they want to kill your townswomen? The mayor of that town apparently doesn't so he gives them the boot.

Because it's part of their cultural tradition, and doesn't seriously inconvenience anyone but them?

And yes, I've heard about students that complain that their veiled teachers are hard to hear, and other such stories. But the answer to that problem and others like it is not a blanket ban on the practice.

About the covering the face: the town needs to suck it.

About the pouring acid on women and stoning them to death: the immigrants need to suck it.

I don't get it. Isn't all this already covered in Canada's laws? What's the point?

It's already illegal to kill women by stoning them in public, burning them alive, burning them with acid, circumcising them etc.

So of course the town is right to enforce the law.

That's what's so preposterous about this story, PW. Why would they come out with such nonsense when there aren't any immigrants in their hick, unilingual little town? Pure ignorance and nothing else.

sounds fine to me, one religion set against another as usual(using the term religion loosely), the same scenario when two different people live together but have entirely different views on how to live, they end up fighting unless their views strangely compliment each others (very rare)

Aspointed out earlier -- there are already laws forbidding murder. There are no immigrants living near this town. This is like planting a big sign at the road into town saying, "If you're not from around here, don't plan on staying."

I just find it ironic, given that I heave heard so much about Canada supposedly to be so much socially superior than the US. When people point out the flaws of ignorant hick towns in the US, and we point out that it's isolated to ignorant hick towns, the whole US is tarred from the same brush. I'm wondering how it feels now that the shoe is apparently on the other foot and this has made international news.

There is nothing "redneck" or "hickish" about underlining human rights standards, but to direct it at immigrants in a town with no record of human rights abuses by immigrants - or even asny immigrants at all - is superfluous.

I think this is one part rural reaction to the times, and one part French cultural protection. While the rest of Canada seems to revel in multiculturalism, a very long tradition of keeping Quebec french is having a dissimilar effect in La Belle Province.

I didn't realize there wasn't any immigrants in that town. I thought they might have been doing it because of issues they'd had in the past. Not that they should have a problem with women covering their faces. But some of the more oppressive things they mentioned (not driving, ect) were things they've seen firsthand.

That town is nuts. Now that it's reached international news maybe noone will move there and the town will just wither up.

It's mainly a collection of prejudices spelled out. They're being assholes. What they should have done was refrain from listing everything that they could think of and focussing the statement on the real problems, such as the circumcisions. Those do occur and bringing that out in public is a good thing. Muddling the message with unnecessary crap like "You shouldn't stone women either" is counterproductive.

I think the puropse of this was to simply to speek against extremism now rather than later. These sorts of practises saddly are too common, both in the Muslim world and in the west. The feeling is that if you do not state your feelings then they will be challenged later. This is, I would agree, clumsy of them, but it was well intended but badly practised.

Though actually I, and probably most others voted yes before we realised that it's an immigrantless town in the first place - thus the declaration was unnecessary.
