i can think of 3 reasons
1) some people have a chip on their shoulder and anything that doesnt go their way is a personal insult, in these cases caused by racism
2) it works
3) they are actually being discriminated against because of their race
for the burger king woman, id guess its #1
for the applebees woman it might be all 3. she was disciminated against because the waitress assumed that an hispanic mother of small children wasnt going to tip her, she wants free meals, and if her story is correct, the waitress may indeed have had racist feelings toward hispanics.

Virigina, did you ever consider that it might have taken longer to prepare your meals because they were making sure that everything on your plate was uniformly sized and shaped? Surely Applebees doesn't want a Burger King misshapen chicken fries scandal on their hands!

I can't beleive the customer at Appelbees had the audacity to ask the server to watch her kids while she went to the bathroom. If the customer at the drive thru want's perfect chicken fries, I'd suggest she cook them herself at home. Both these people have way to much time on their hands. :(
racism isn't illeagal is it? Burger King has the right to not serve black people right?

beyond that, why, if you got treated poorly, would you want free meals from the same place? Sorry, a bent chicken fry or a 10 minute wait for food is not racism, and not something you deserve a free meal for. The cooks at the BK were probably laughing because she was a bitch.

I did a little research in to this. I believe the lunch counters were forced to integrate under the equal protection clause of the fourteenth amendment, but then i found this on a legal reference website.
"An individual's right to restrict the use of his property, however unregenerate a particular exercise of that right may be thought, lies beyond the reach of the Fourteenth Amendment. The dilution or virtual elimination of that right cannot well be justified either on the premise that it will hasten formal repeal of outworn segregation laws or on the ground that it will facilitate proof of state action in cases of this kind."

I've never been one to do something like that, but I have watched, on many occasions, some pretty nasty shit happen to a rude customers food. I have worked with some twisted people in my dad...
"never fuck with people who handle your food" is the rule to live by. There is a good reason why the movie "Waiting" was made, and why there is a website called bitterwaitress

the lunch counters were forced to integrate do to the Commerce Clause. It empowers the United States Congress to impose its laws on interstate commerce regardless of the states current laws. since tourists from one state to another are concidered a part of interstate commerce, state segregation laws cannot affect them, and since you can't really tell you is a tourist with out asking for an id, you can't deny them from public eating facilities.
Gibbons v. Ogden is one example of this.

If a customer wanted to sit in her car at a drive thru window I was working at for no other reason than just to make a point I would get angry too. A lot of places keep track of the average time cars wait at the window to make sure the service speedy. There is even a bit of compitition in the region to see who has the fastest service.

I always play the race card when dining out. I'm white and a very good tipper. When I sit down in a busy eatery, I loudly clear my throat and say "Whitey at table one!" and the wait staff usually fights over who gets to serve me first. If I'm particularly white that day, I get a free piece of pie.

There is certainly that. Those who shout the loudest are often the most guilty themselves.
Further, I would guess that there is also the persecution complex that many have. Or maybe just a useful tactic. If something goes wrong and you have a convienient target of another race, simply shout "racism!" and you think you will get out of whatever trouble you are in. Which is why if you fire a black employee you can get the inevitable "is this because I'm black?" Not that they are a terrible worker, nope, can't be that.

Very interesting! I geuss this means that no buisness in America has the right to choose their customers without interference from government.
Why are you so interested in trying to find out whether you can legally deny black people service, anyway? It doesn't matter what the letter of the law might say, there isn't a court that won't convict you.

Very interesting! I geuss this means that no buisness in America has the right to choose their customers without interference from government.
Keeping racist owners denying service to people of other races seems like a very good idea. Of course this doesn't stop many businesses from putting up "we reserve the right to refuse service to anyone" signs. As far as I'm aware, as long as you have a valid reason, businesses can choose to deny service.

Yeah, as a former fast-food employee, I can tell you all of her claims are complete and total bullshit.
Sprite not available? That happens sometimes. Our soda fountains do run out occasionally in the middle of a lunch rush and while we try to replace the empty box of soda syrup as soon as possible it's not always possible for us to do so immediately. And sometimes we even run out of the boxes completely, due to a clerical error or unexpected popularity, ect ect. That's how life works, you funky winkerbein.
Now, the employees should not have been snickering at her--presuming they were--as that is rude to the customer but she overreacted. Mistakes happen. A misplaced burger, a forgotton carton of fries, two and a half chicken strips instead of three...these are not the results of racism, they are the results of the common little mistakes and mishaps that plague life itself. Get over it. Sheesh.

It's harmful to the economy? Come on, that's bullshit and you know it. If anything it's harmful to deny people of a certain race to frequent your establishment because that cuts down on the number of customers you get. And you're certainly sounding like a racist right now.
Frankly, I don't care what a person's opinions are. They could be ten times as racist as Hitler for all I care. But in business, you should not be allowed to throw your personal opinions around and deny customers based on those opinions. That's just wrong and infringing upon their civil liberties, that is, the right to be treated equally both in business and under the law. I have no problem with such a regulation because it does not hurt any business whatsoever. If you have that much of a problem with serving customers of a different ethnicity, go open a business somewhere where the population is only of your ethnicity. There's plenty of places like that across the U.S.

The race card...
Has to be stupid as hell. It's only used by idiots who are desperate for the money they can get when they sue people. America needs to stop being so bloody oversensitive about everything, which would make it so that people like that woman would have no incentive to act like that.

Yes, dangerous in that it might make their racist douchebag customers stop going there. Too bad, so sad. They should stop appealing to racist douchebags.

The government should not tell me how to run my buisness(I dont really have a buisness). First its, "You cannot discriminate based on race," then its "You cannot discriminate based on age, religion, clothing, credit card affiliate, ect." If you deny entrepeneurs rights and abilities, economic law says that it will deter new buisness prospects. Sure it gives the entrepenuers the ability to be racist, but it certainly doesn't allow the government to be racist.

Too bad reality gets in the way of "economic laws."
If I see this woman, I'm going to make a point of giving her crooked fries.

Because of this, the man behind me honked, I do not believe at me but more at the lady in the window's behavior.
This woman needs to get her head out of the sand...
Refund of my money, free meals for one year at BK, firing of employee or severe disciplinary action, maybe a diversity seminar/class
Do people actually ask for free stuff as compensation? I thought it was just something companies propose to placate them.
God, what if we don't stop it? Soon she'll be complaining her boyfriend's wang isn't big enough 'cause he's racist, and then her breasts will start shrinking 'cause of racism, and then condoms will get holes in them 'cause of racism, and then the JFK was not her husband 'cause of racism, and BAM! next thing you know she doesn't have a nuclear reactor 'cause of racism!
...A disturbing amount of those are sexual...

Please read the complaint letters I've linked to below. The woman in question seems to blame a crooked chicken fry from Burger King and slow service at Applebee's restaurant on racism. Why do you think some folks are so quick to play the race card?

Because they can.. and it has been encouraged and rewarded in the past. I personally think that boat is about to sail away, and the jew/holocaust card will out trump and out live their slave/racism card for a long time to come.

since no one would have an economy if there was no government in place to allow it, i'd say it's based on the foundation of our government, the constitution.

I think it's absurd. I think the race card is definately being overplayed and will soon whither and die.
Why do some people play the "race card"? To cry discrimination and how they want equal rights when they really want special priviledges and treatment. That doesn't sound like equal rights to me. Sounds like they want superior treatment.

Because it works? I'm thinking of playing it on my English teacher.
P.S. Teehee...."eight and a defect"...
Heh. One of my students tried it and managed to humiliate himself.
My family has been in America for generations -- on my dad's (Sicilian) side I'm third generation, and on my mom's (Puerto Rican), second generation.
The day before said student embarassed himself, it had come up when a student asked about my favorite foods that I was part Puerto Rican. The class thought it was neat, because it was a class of Second Language Learners -- their first language being Spanish. Said student was absent that day.
The next day I needed someone to go to the office to pick something up, and said student had proven to be a hallwalker already. I passed over him and chose someone more reliable.
"You're prejudiced against me because I'm Puerto Rican!"
Fortunately, the kid next to him was the one who said, "Dumbass, SHE'S Puerto Rican too!"

As a part-time till-monkey. Anyone who comes back to complain about something as monumentally stupid as that deserves anything bad that could ever happen to them. It really is just taking the piss.
Also, what colour is Hispanic skin?
Everything from what someone would consider 'white' to 'black' and all tones in between.

racism isn't illeagal is it? Burger King has the right to not serve black people right?
Racism is not illegal. Refusing to serve someone or treating them differently because of their race is.

Which is why if you fire a black employee you can get the inevitable "is this because I'm black?" Not that they are a terrible worker, nope, can't be that.
This is why in a previous place of employment, my boss put up with gross incompetance, absenteeism (every Monday and Friday, wow, who'dathought?) and nastiness from a female African American employee for five years until her file was as thick as a brick. Then he fired her.
I remember the first day I met her, my very first day on the job. I was trying to make a copy for my boss and she demanded to know what I was doing at the copy machine. My answer was, "Making a copy for ______________." to which she muttered, "Stupid," before turning to walk away.
I said, "Hey, don't talk about _________ that way!"
She turned around, and said, "What?"
"I said, don't talk about __________ that way," I said, getting right in her face, "because I know you weren't talking to ME. I don't take that fucking bullshit from ANYONE."
Amazingly, she was polite to me the rest of the time we worked together, and treated everyone else like absolute dogshit.

Logic would say that turning away customers is bad for business, because turning away customers is turning away revenue.
Let the asshole refuse customers. He's taking money out of his own pocket and food out of his own mouth. When his competitor gets all the custom he's turning away he can sit there and wonder why his store is still a dusty storefront and the competitor has a small chain of stores.
Sadly, national businesses like Denny's and Burger King have to serve everyone equally... charge the same prices, provide the same food. You know. Because it's the law, and because they are not stupid enough to turn away money.

I hope that this has been said somewhere already, but I strongly suspect that "Virginia" doesn't even exist, nor did this person visit the restaurants mentioned, or that the episodes even happened.
