European ways are impinging on a system that has worked well for hundreds of years. Bringing technology, modern medicine and the nuts and bolts of modern life to people who want it is fine, but trying to impose our culture, particularly religion, on people is wrong.

 Triple thread post. Gotta love Jolt.

I don't know when the lesson will be learned.

Less technology /= less civilised /= needs to be interfered with

Hmm, very interesting.

Though I'd find it hilarious if all of a sudden I fall in love with the chef of my super-delicious foods. :p

If this wasn't there three times, I'd've skipped it.

That said, I don't follow...Europe is forcing men to propose?

P.S. Shouldn't Hotrodia have said "Triplicate thread"?

gah, missionaries should be strung up from the nearest palm tree the moment they set foot on the beach.

having said that, any society that traditionally expects one gender to do all the work in a relationship is pretty backward, including our own. but then, i wouldn't presume to tell people that they must change their traditions. many things become traditions simply because they work, as this one seems to have done.

perhaps "thread posted in triplicate" would be better, or "triple thread". but i'm no grammar expert. at least it wasn't "treble thread".

Yeah, but I'm lazy when it come to deleting threads and didn't bother to switch from my standard line.

And can we stay on-topic, folks? Cultural imperialism is a much more important topic than my listed reason for deleting a thread. Just sayin'

I believe in Cultural Darwinism. If a cultural meme is supported by the people who adopt it, then it will continue to survive, however, if it doesn't have that support, it will fail.

I support globalisation as I see that it puts potentially negative cultural traits to the test of survival of the fittest. In the case of this island, certain matriarchal memes are facing this test, and seem to be surviving.

Also the article was really sweet.

The only mention of Europe was the part regarding the anthropologist.

It seems to me that its missionaries who are forcing change in this society...

No, seriously. People are forcing men to propose?

They should be presented with the option, but after they've folded all the religious pamphlets into paper airplanes and had a good laugh at the West's mysoginistic concept of chivalry, they should be left to continue serving their fish dinners.

So what happens if a guy goes into a diner on that island and orders the fish and chips? Is he now married to the waitress?

Only if he asked for the special sauce.

No, the man couldn't order the fish and chips. It would have to be brought to him. ;)

Anyway, I don't think they actually have many diners on that island, and certainly not diners that serve fish and chips. But meh, what do I know.

I see a business opportunity. Who wants to invest in a chain of New Jersey style diners on remote, primitive African Islands?
