Tests show bird flu is H5N1 virus

The European Commission says tests have confirmed that the avian flu which killed 2,600 turkeys at a Suffolk farm is the H5N1 virus.

That virus can be fatal if it is passed on to humans.

According to the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, there were 159,000 other turkeys on the farm, and they may now be slaughtered.

Vets were called to the Bernard Matthews farm in Holton late on Thursday night.

According to an EC statement, a three-kilometre protection zone and a 10km surveillance zone will now be set up.

Not good. I can't help but remember the BSE nightmate. I hope Defra don't fuck this like they did the BSE outbreak. I also hope to see global peace.

It amuses me that people are suddenly blaming this on factory farming. Most bird flu cases are from wild birds, and chickens and turkeys are actually much less likely to be infected if they're kept in indoor farms.

Anyway, I bet nothing much will happen over this. You get the usual people screaming "We're all doomed!", but I think the only real danger is that of an agricultural crisis and even that's fairly unlikely.

Who is blaming this on factory farming? Factory farming (besides providing crap and unhealthy product) allows a greater chance of contagion.

You don't live in the country do you?

Not on this forum, but I've seen on other places (Such as the BBC News Have Your Say section) people putting it down to factory farming. Now I don't like factory farming, but it is more effective in preventing bird flu. Bird flu spreads through wild birds, so if birds are kept indoors in controlled conditions (Completely way from any wild birds) they're far less likely to catch it in the first place. I think these turkeys only caught it because they were imported.

You don't live in the country do you?
Nope. Lived in the country at one point, but I'm basing this off infortmation that I've gathered about the virus.

Hmmm like I said...if a factory farm gets the virus it will go through the flock like a hot knife through butter. This is a perfect example (also the first attack in a commercial environment) of that.

However to say that the factory farming is causing H5N1 is obvious bollocks because as you say it is spread by wild birds. It just spreads fast in controlled environments like those found in a factory farm.

None of the stories I've read so far about this outbreak have said where the birds came from but knowing Matthews I find that unlikely. It makes no sense to import the birds from his other factories abroad.

Yeah...fair enough. When the foot and mouth hit agriculture it caused a huge amount of grief and bankruptcy.

I read an article that said scientists were able to stop transmission of the Spanish influenza virus by changing two of the amino acids on the surface of the virus. If we could discover similar properties in the H5N1 virus, we could conceivably do the same thing in order to stop it from spreading and thereby annihilate it.

I personally believe that al this bird -flu apocalyptic talk is a load of bullshit. the only people that have died are the people in Asia that work much more closely to the birds than we do in Europe and America. Besides, I live in Suffolk and eat Suffolk birds and I'm... *cough cough splutter, falls over dead*

Bird Flu - it's the new SARS!

No.

Bird flu is not an issue for Human with regards to a pandemic until two things happen...it effects humans and becomes an airborne contagion.

SARS was controllable once it was diagnosed and understood.

However SARS showed that protocols must be followed. Laxity allows death.

I meant more in respect to the media overplaying it massively. We are not all going to die from bird flu, for crying out loud. It killed so many after the Great War because everyone was hungry and knackered out. It shouldn't be such a problem nowadays.

Like I said....if the two conditions are met then the post WWI flu pandemic will look like a minor cold compared to what this can do. If the conditions are met.
