The Weather was Scary Today

I was so scared this morning. When I left the house, the sky was orangeish-yellow. The sky turned a normal color by the time I got to school, but I think my area was a lot better off than other areas of Florida. There was at least one tornado today, many people don't have power, and 14 people have died.

Here's an article about it. (http://www.baynews9.com/content/36/2007/2/2/220329.html?title=Vicious+storms+kill+14+in+Florida)

IN Washington DC there is an emergency network you can sign up for, where they send you an email or text message in the event of a major catastrophe (inclement weather, terrorism, second coming etc.).

Today a weather advisory was sent out over said network valid from 9 am to 6 pm saying there was a 20% chance of snow.

The sky was orange? That is because of something called "Sun".

Well, better the sky than orange snow.

Anyway, I´m glad you´re ok.

No, it was different than usual. I leave around the same time each day and it wasn't orange-yellow like that before. It was windy and the whole sky was orange, and I could see the color through the curtains. It was really creepy. It was like looking at one of those pictures that is tinted yellow or orange.

I'm really glad that we didn't get a tornado or anything like that here.

I know the creepy yellow you speak of, it's followed by the creepy green and then the loud tornado.

I am glad you are okay.

It is a really eerie feeling though, and everything just seems wrong.....the creepy green is slightly worse because by that point there is so much electricity in the air that your body is like "OMG hide!"

Here, the creepy yellow faded away and a tornado didn't come, but there was a tornado a few counties north of mine. It does feel really eerie. I had heard by then that there had been a tornado and at least one death earlier, and I was terrified that there would be one near me when I saw that the sky was yellow.

in case you don't know, lowest level, center of the house. Bathrooms are generally acceptable if you don't have a closet near the center of the house, I have survived my house being blown away (literally) twice, once I was in the bathtub with a twin mattress over me, the bathtub was literally all that was left of the house. (the other time I was in a closet, and it didn't make it, but I did)

Yeah, I know. Our bathrooms all have windows and are at the outer edges of the house and we don't have a closet in the center of the house, but we have a hallway that works.

cool. My girls also like to put on their "debris clothes" like blue jeans and shoes and long sleeved shirts, that will protect you a little more from glass and such. We tend to pile up all our pillows and blankets to give us more smush to hide under.

It's not common in Oklahoma to have a basement, our clay soil is too hard to work with and it would crush the basement.

Rich people have storm shelters. The rest of us make do with what we have, which is basically closets and bathrooms......

most movies are set in the New England area or the upper midwest, where basements are more common.

Both houses that I lived in when I was still in Ohio had basements. My UK house didn't have a basement, and neither did my DC apartment, my VA apartment, nor my current NC house. There is a closet on the outer edge, and no windows. Over the last 7 years, we've had at least 5 tornadoes and 5 hurricanes come to my NC house. (Well, the tornadoes are normally far from the house, but when I was 12 one was barreling down a main street behind my house  and my dad called from WDC to tell us about it :p)

I once saw a show where a hurricane was hitting the area (I think the show was set in New England) and the producers didn't even get the hurricane right. There was lightning during the hurricane, and lightning is actually rare in hurricanes. Thank you for un-educating the coastal masses, Dawson's Creek*.

*For the record, I've never seen a full episode of the show, and I've only seen 2 episodes and didn't understand the first one I saw.

I don't think you can have basements in Florida. Something to do with the water levels underground, I think, but I'm not sure about that.

Funny enough, a lot of places in Tornado Alley DON'T have basements.

Up here in NYC where we don't have tornados (generally) I do have one. Go figure.

That sounds about right. I watched a show about how they built WDW, and essentially, even though they drained swampland to build there, had they dug the tunnel complex that exists under the park, it would have sunk... so they built the concrete tunnels ABOVE ground.... then put 15-20 feet of dirt over that and built the park on that graded ground.

And I thought a majority of houses in the U.S. had basements.
