OK, my turn for a meaningless poll. I don't think I've ever done one yet. :p

Maybe it can even lead to some sort of serious discussion.

If there had to be two "superpowers" in the world (defined as you please), which would you prefer them to be (or be least reluctant)?

You don't have to limit yourselves to poll options, of course.

Liberal democracies, who trade with one another.

European Union and United States, because they are both Western and Democractic = not likely to actually start killing each other. Soon.

Sweden, Switzerland, Canada and Australia may look peaceful now that they are in positions where they have next to no power; once corrupted by the spoils of power, I have no doubt that those countries would be as murderous and self-interested as every other major power in human history.

So, I vote none of the above. It's not an option? Okay. Brazil and South Africa! They might actually try to use their power to develop their respective regions. Although I doubt it.

Although I'm an Oz I had to ignore that option because we would put everyone in desert prison camps.;)

So I chose Tuvalu and Kiribati because they're nearby and we would bask in their reflected wealth and glory. And when our economy failed or we degenerated into civil war then we could pay people smugglers, hop into boats and sail there, sharks, pirates and offshore detention centres permitting.

Switzerland is plenty powerful. They have enough stockpiled arms and militarised society to conquer all of Western Europe if they put their minds to it.

US and EU or France and Germany. Two stable, democratic nations with fairly similar positions on social and economic issues. It would produce more cooperation than competition, which would be a very good thing and would help stabilize the geopolitical situation worldwide.

I don't want Canada to become a superpower. I think we need to spend some serious time solving our domestic issues and offering support for countries in crisis. I have no desire for us to have world domination, either economic or military.
