That's right folks, they've banned the Mexican wave at all international cricket grounds in Australia. Full link here: http://www.stuff.co.nz/stuff/3947986a10133.html

This saddens me. We need that wave to keep the crowd alive, especially on the more dull matches.

What do you reckon?

P.S. And what the hell? Cups full of urine? Who DOES that?

Cricket is a British sport isn't it? STEREOTYPICAL SUCKAGE!

Seriously, why the hell would anyone do the wave at a cricket match? That's like doing the wave at an opera. It's boring. You don't do the wave for boring.

But still, this is pathetic. The wave, whether deserved or not, is still the most awesome invention to ever be taken in by sports fans. Banning it is like ripping out a piece of their soul.

Doing the wave ought to be a kick-in-the-junkable offense.

Why? It's awesome fun, best thing the mexicans ever did. Ever.

SO... if all of the people in the crowd do the wave, they'll kick out everyone and have the match continue?

wow. last time i checked, i don't remember the wave involved throwing random things in the air as well.

It's not fun, and the sheeple who do it obscure my view.

I'd like to see them try.

"Officer! Arrest that abstract, amorphous pattern! Quick, before it disappears into the crowd! Oh, you fool, it's getting away!"

Across the Pond, we just call it the Wave. Considering it was invented in the US, and we were explosed to it before Europe was, its not suprising.

This is why you JOIN the wave. So you're standing when the people in front of you are standing. Meaning you're still able to see over them. Unless they're sporting a righteous fro.

Not to mention, the half second that the wave is in front of you is not exactly enough to miss anything important.

And the best thing the Mexicans ever did is NOT the wave. It's the Mexican hat dance. That music kicks ass.

Did anyone of you actually read the article?

They ban the wave because people started throwing things in the air while "waving". So they don't object to the wave itself.

It's origins are actually traced back to a hockey game in Canada in the '80s.

Why do those people have cups of urine?

In other news, the Pommies are retaliating to our use of the phrase "whinging Pom", by running to the UN and whinging about it :p

Ohhh, now that's funny, the "Mexican" wave

It's the "wave", just the "wave". ¡La OLA, ahí viene la OLA!

It has been done in Latinoamérica for decades. I think the first ones to made that one, as far as I recall, were the argentinians fútbol (soccer) fans. Of course, when the mexicans fans, that copied that one from the argentinians and the Brazilians, did it during the US World Cup of 1994, it became an international phenomenon.

Around here in Latin turf, it is compulsory to do the wave, unless you want people to yell at you. And the wave includes beer, forcefully, you NEED to throw the beer you are holding into the air when the wave comes, and enjoy the oncoming beer bath. If you don't want to get bathed in beer, then you can pay for a space in the VIP area during the baseball matches, if not, prepare yourself for the beer.

It is used mainly in baseball and football matches, although even chess matches can have one. Please!, even political protests MUST include the wave!

It did surprise me as well when I learned they call it "Mexican wave." I guess it's kind of annoying to the rest of the American countries that have also been doing it for donkey's years. We just call it "la ola" as well. Don't know where we got it from, I thought maybe US college football or maybe baseball that's more watched in Mexico.

Acually, according to ESPN, the wave originated when some proffesional cheerleader guy at a minor league baseball stadium pointed at sections of the stands while running around to get them to stand in the early 80s. A few days later, at a college football game, a news reporter who was an alumn of the home school started what is now considered to be the first free flowing sports wave. Or, that was the story as best as i can recall. I think it was the 25th anniversery of the wave or something.

I think it's ridiculous and if you're that bored at the game, you aren't a real fan, so go home and let someone else have the seat.

'The Wave' just sounds ambiguous, if someone said to me, "let's do a wave", I'd just wave my hand as if saying hello.

And I've never heard of any of this throwing stuff business.

I don't do it cause I'm bored, I do it to help the crowd get back into cheering. Home team advantage and all that. Same reason I ever cheer at sports games, to show support for my team.

Traditionally a mexican wave at a cricket event is started out by a drunk, often half naked guy jumping up, facing the crowd, screaming 'MEXICAN WAVE!!' and then counting down from ten. If enough people join in counting down, it gets attention and at one the wave starts.

They're now going to eject that guy, I think.

Which is exactly why they can stop it :(

And why it makes me sad.
