NJ High School Begins Alcohol Test

A High School in New Jersey (making it VERY important) has decided to start random urine tests for alcohol. As a high school student, I say they are going to far. I don't drink and think alcohol is bad, but this is ridiculous. If people want to get drunk and die, more for the Darwin awards then. :) There is also a problem that almost everyone will get caught by this. From what I've seen, a good majority of teenagers drink alcoholic beverages several times a month.

PEQUANNOCK, N.J. - Some teenagers who drink over the weekend could be in big trouble come Monday morning: A New Jersey school district plans to institute random urine tests capable of detecting whether alcohol was consumed up to 80 hours earlier.

Pequannock Township High, with about 800 students, said it will begin administering the tests next Monday.

"This is a major issue for America," School Superintendent Larrie Reynolds said Tuesday. "There are more kids that die each year in alcohol-related traffic deaths than there are soldiers who have died in
Iraq. The numbers are staggering."

At least one other New Jersey high school, in Middletown, employs the EtG test, which screens for ethyl glucuronide, a substance produced by the body when it metabolizes alcohol.

Pequannock teenagers who participate in sports or other extracurricular activities, or drive to school, are already tested for illegal drugs, under a 2005 program prompted by the heroin overdose of a student.

Students who test positive for alcohol will not be kicked off teams or barred from extracurricular activities. Instead they will receive counseling and their parents will be notified, Reynolds said.

"That's going to give our kids riding in the back seat of someone's car a very powerful reason to say no," he said.

Drug tests, similarly, can detect drug use that occurred days earlier.

The new test worries civil-liberties advocates and others who oppose school drug testing as an invasion of privacy.

"Medical care and treatment are issues between parents and children," said Deborah Jacobs, executive director of the
American Civil Liberties Union of New Jersey.

They also say that common household products such as mouthwash can produce a positive test result. Reynolds said that the test has been recalibrated so that for students to test positive, they would generally have to consume one or two drinks.

The EtG test costs about $20, Reynolds said. The school's overall testing program is funded by a three-year, $120,000 federal grant.

"No one's really taking it seriously. If you want to go to a party, you're still going to go to a party," senior Matt Huber said.

If its a publically funded school (state run) then really it is none of the schools business what kids get up to outside of school time. This must rate as an invasion to privacy.

If the kids are breaking the law then it is up to law enforcement agencies to deal with that.

I see nothing wrong with forcing urine tests, but I have a problem with extrapolating criminal behavior from them. Teenagers are allowed to drink; finding traces of alcohol in their urine would prove nothing. If, on the other hand, the test was to pluck hairs in order to check them for drugs, I would be an advocate of such action.

this is going way too far. A school has no place in their student's bedrooms.

So what? Minors have human rights, but almost no social rights. Social rights are gained at the age of majority.

And that should be dealt with by the parents...not the school...

Not here, here it is perfectly acceptable to apply prohabitionary laws that target people who have reached the age of majority, but fall with in a specific age group, because discrimination based on age is perfectly acceptable so long as it isn't aimed at the elderly.

This story reminded me of another I read ages ago, and can't remember where.

What I do remember is that a urologist was telling this story about a patient who complained of frequent urinary tract infections. This guy made a living by using a foley catheter to remove the urine from his bladder and then replace it with wine. He would then go to BDSM parties and urinate wine into people's mouths.

I like to think that I'd have the balls to piss actual merlot into the a specimen jar if called to submit to this degrading test.

Sounds really inefficient. What if the students don't have to pee at the time they are being asked for a sample. Do they wait in the washroom all day?

Reminds me of New Jersey v. T.L.O. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Jersey_v._TLO)

And, really, this doesn't sound as bad. The punishment:
...they will receive counseling and their parents will be notified, Reynolds said.

Meh. I mean, my folks would beat me to within an inch of my life, but at least it's not like "we'll expel you and throw you in prison, teenage drunkie!!"

HOLY SHIT! That town is just down the road from mine!

If I was ever searched, I think I'd demand a warrant. Can't really say if I'd actually do it, but hopefully I would...

This is totalitarian and makes a mockery of the Constitution. If I were to be tested w/o a warrant, I'd raise hell. Yell, scream, fight, sue, I don't care. No government official is getting my fluids without my permission or a valid warrant made on just causes.

I don't care if it IS in the student's 'best' interest. It is not only outside of a school's domain of EDUCATION, but it is against the Constitution, no matter what SCOTUS is supposed to have said.

I sum this up in the words of Eric Cartman.

"It's wrong...

it's WRONG!

it's WROOOONG."
