The Curious Case of the Common Cold

Whereyouthinkyougoing

I have a cold and it seems entirely possible that I'll die. From sheer frustration, if nothing else.

I hate colds. Hate them. Haaaaaaaaate them. I spent the last two days sniffling and coughing and sneezing and blowing my nose and generally looking like Rudolph the rednosed reindeer.

I hate wimpy people who whine about silly little boo boos like colds. But boy do I ever hate colds. *whines* I would much rather have a broken wrist, or maybe even a nice quick case of gastroenteritis.

What is it about colds that makes them suck ever so very much? And are you a whiner or a bearer?

I'm actually a bearer, I only whine in my head.
And on NSG, apparently.

Don't say it.

I whine and bear it.:D

I whine about the fact that I have a cold due to the fact that my colds last FOREVER (like >3 months) so as soon as I get a cold I get into this "for christsake..not AGAIN!" speil.

I bear it as whining does no good anyway so whats the point?

I whine. Unabashedly. I despise being more sick than I always am. I'm suffering through a cold right now, and my family is about ready to stick me in the washer or something.

Better than a stomach flu. Those are a million times worse.

I live alone. :( Yeah, me too. Although, to be honest, I know how impatient I am with sick people (esp. the wimpy ones who only have a cold) and, let's face it, there's only so much empathy one can have with someone who has a cold, so I don't know if having someone around who'd eventually simply go ahead with their un-colded lives would be so very comforting.

i generally bear it, but if someone asks me how i am and i have a cold then i don't hesitate to tell them i feel like shit. i seem to have been lucky recently though, my last cold lasted less than a week but it was an absolute stinker and it was just when i was trying to write several essays so i really needed to push myself. i bumped into one of my workmates in the library and she said i looked like i was about to collapse. and then when i mentioned about a week later to one of my friends as a reason for why i had trouble doing the essay she accused me of having "man-flu", that really pissed me off seeing as i never called it flu and never complained at the time. i mean, fair-enough she's had a chest-infection for about 4 months but i never even compared it to how bad her illness was. i reckon head-colds feel worse than chest-colds though, you can't think straight with a head-cold. /rant

I hate colds because whenever I have them I'm pretty much incapacitated for however long they last. It's like my body goes "ZOMG! Bad things - time to shut down entirely so we can kill them!" And then I sleep for the duration. I'm not kidding, either. I had a cold a couple of weeks ago that had me in bed and sleeping for five days.

But I don't whine about them for the most part, at least not out loud. ;)

And go make yourself some nice tea with liberal doses of honey, lemon and whiskey in it. Works wonders for me, especially for a sore throat. :)

Well, I'm sure I'll say the opposite in a couple days, when I haven't had enough sleep in 72 hours and my sinuses have clogged up completely, causing my ears great trauma.

But, from a purely objective mode of thought, stomach flus are a million times worse. This is just uncomfortable. A stomach flu hurts. 'Course I get stomach flus worst. I get them really violently for about 6 hours, and then I spend 24 hours with the feeling that someone punched me in the stomach, normally with a blinding headache, so I'm bored, in pain, and unable to treat it because of the illness.

Still... I feel your pain. Litterally.

I don't mind a cold so much, but the ones I catch seem to be fairly mild, so that's probably why. When I first get one I do try to take advantage and feel as sorry for myself as I possibly can. Doesn't work much, because Herself gives me a hug and tells me to go take some sudafed.

I think they feel rotten because they make you feel bad, achy and snurfy and tired. Perhaps it's the constant leaking from the nose that makes it worse. With a broken wrist or a nice quick case of gastroenteritis, you can slink off somewhere and be alone (with the latter, I hope you will). With a cold, you're out there in public with a runny nose.

I think most of the hatred of common colds I harbour is due to what I call "the cold rule."
That is, you will always get a cold when it is the worst possible time to get it, usually in summer or around christmas time when your SUPPOSED to be happy, but instead end up single handedly supporting the tissue industry.

I've got a damned cold too. I hate the fuckers - we can go to the moon, but we can't solve this little bugger once and for all?

I normally don't complain that much though, at least out loud. It seems pointless to make my misery known - nothing the people around me can do anyhow.
Ilie
31-01-2007, 21:53
I think the worst part about colds for me is the fact that they always transition seamlessly into a sinus infection. That means I have to wait until it qualifies as a sinus infection (i.e. be miserable for about 3 weeks), go to the doctor ($20 copay), get medicine ($40), take the medicine EVERY DAY for 10 days without missing even ONE dose...

...and then spend the next 10 days coughing the shit out of my system, causing me to lose my voice. That means I've been sick or appeared sick for more than a month.

EVERY TIME I get a cold this happens. So yeah...I hate them.

I personally would rather have a cold than a stomache ache. Which I sort of have now.

Well it was definately summer today as I sat and watched Wellington lose the semi final from the bank. Bloody hot out there.

I frickin' hate colds. During my math class on Friday I caught something because throughout the entire 3 hour class my throat got drier, and drier, and drier. Then, when I got home I started to get a fever, then I woke up the next day and I had a severe sore throat, a fever, fatigue, runny nose and a really bad cough with lots of phlegm...

And here I am, on Tuesday with all the same symptoms. God life sucks right now.

p.s. I'm a whiner fo' sho'.
