X-ray cameras 'see through clothes'

The Government is considering installing X-ray cameras on lampposts to spot armed terrorists and other criminals.

Well, just because they're considering it doesn't mean it will ever happen.

And hopefully it won't.

Couple this with the speakers, and hilarity will ensue.

"See, I told you they were fake."
"Shut up the mic is on!"
"Oh shit, not again"

Well I can't wait for the crappy tv programmes like Police Camera Action etc to start using the footage.

If I were you I would look at the source for that story. The Sun is probably is on a par with the US National Enquirer.

Once again the government is looking out for our own best interests by installing periodic healthcheck stations up and down britain. Never again will you have to agonise over whether a funnily shaped arm is actually broken, simply take a trip down to the shops and you'll be informed within 30 working days!

Hopefully The Sun is, as usual, getting it horribly wrong, making it up, or at least blowing it out of all proportion. We can but hope.

Ooh, cool! A camera that turns respectable businessmen into knife-wielding neanderthals! I want one!

While the health and privacy issues are quite worrying - or would be if I seriously believed the government would put x-rays on lamp posts - I find it amusing that people are worried the camera will see through their clothes. Somehow I can't imagine a bunch of perverts staring at women through the cameras saying "phwoar, check out the femurs on her!"

Let's hope they implement these X-ray cameras. I could do with some extra cash. Anyone up for a class action lawsuit?

I believe it is the second link you posted, as always blame superman and his x-ray eyes for the media misrepresenting things. Also the BBC has now got an article on their website about it (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/6309917.stm). So people trying to discredit it by saying it is only in the Sun will have to work a little bit (not much though) harder.

Not even a little bit harder. Notice how the BBC website uses the line 'Leaked documents said to have been drawn up by the Home Office and seen by the Sun newspaper...'
In other words their only source of information is the Sun, the newspaper that brought us 'Loch Ness Monster is Nazi U-Boat'.

As for the privacy issue, if you have nothing to hide what is the problem?
Remind me: Killing people is wrong, because ______?

But all is not lost:
Why not just microchip us all at birth, and post sniffer dogs and x-ray machines outside everyone's front door?

I think that was the Sunday Sport...who also did the 'Wellington Bomber Found on Moon'....then the following Sunday printed - 'Wellington Bomber Vanishes from the Moon'...

X-rays eh? Not a chance...would they really risk a radiation source to be knicked by chavs?

Also the IAEA would go ape...

No...this is the usual way that UK governments gauge public reaction to an idea...they won't do X-rays but they might well use something else etc etc

Leaked documents said to have been drawn up by the Home Office and seen by the Sun newspaper say cameras which can see through clothes could be built into lamp posts to "trap terror suspects".

Not much harder indeed.

Yes, damnit!
We want more radiation! More radiation! More radiation!
How is my plan to cause the human race to mutate and grow tails supposed to get off the ground without some background radiation?

At the Hospital when you get an X-Ray done, the tech leaves the room to hit the switch. Why? Because cumulative exposure to X-Rays will eventually cause damage.

So given that an X-ray device installed on a lamppost would have to take an image even further away, and thus more powerful, why then is it in the interests of the citizens to be blasted with X-Rays every time they walk past? Suppose that's on your way to work... that's 2 exposures a day. 4 if you happen to go that way to go to lunch, too.

And the British call OUR Government foolish...

(Not that it isn't, mind you... just that we're all in the same boat.)

Right, and suppose the bus you're waiting for is held up in traffic, or the girl you're waiting for ... well, at least the police will be able to find everyone at night, from their glow. :p

according to heise.de they are passive scanners and work on terahertz-radiation (for whatever that means)

Still, the politicians considering this should no longer be allowed to have privacy!

i think it is a major invasion of privacy, but i also think it is impossible to do.

maybe i am wrong, but xray machines are quite large machines...they need something on the other side to get an image i think.(so you would need to walk between 2 rather large lampposts)

and is this not a health issue also?

getting xrayed every morning going to get your morning paper and coffee cant be good.

This seems practical.

"Hey there's one! There's o- *explosion*..."

Now the same camera armed with a death ray could have saved many lives that day.
