So I am trying to compile a playlist of relaxing music. Your job is to suggest certain songs or genres that I can..."stumble across" online.

Here is what I want to listen to while sleeping and/or relaxing:

Smooth Jazz
Lite Classical
Mood/sound scapes
New age
General soft music.. I am drawing a blank right now :(

Morphine.

Two Stringed Slide Bass, Bari Sax, Drums, and a voice somewhat similar to Johnny Cash = Awesome.

Chopin études are generally good for reading or napping to, in my experience.

ambient is another genre you might want to take a look at.
some artists that come to my mind are: biosphere, brian eno, future sounds of london, aphex twin (his earlier stuff)

but for a nap in the sun, maybe with a cocktail or a beer - who knows, i tend to like other stuff. just happy songs in general make me relax. so i could recomend you 'devendra banhart' and 'cocorosie' (althought they probably aren't relaxing in the normal sense of the word) because lately i've been listening a lot to them and i could imagine me laying in the sun with a pint in my hand just enjoying life and doing nothing, perfect.

Listening to Iron Maiden tends to help me get to sleep.

Then again, that's just me....

Planet Caravan, by Black Sabbath.

No, I'm not kidding. It's exactly what you've described. Soft, soothing, jazzy.

Many minimalist pieces are quite relaxing, look up Philip Glass (violin concerto, symphonies, various film scores), Ludovico Einaudi (piano music).

I also find Renaissance choral music very relaxing as well, try William Byrd (Ave verum corpus, other motets), Thomas Tallis (Spem in Alium), Palestrina (various), Antonio Lotti (Crucifixus), or perhaps a more modern choral style such as Charles Villiers Standford (the 3 motets are beautiful), Bruckner (Locust iste, other motets).

You have good taste in music!

(Of course, I don't find Renaissance choral music relaxing so much as exciting and fun, but hey, whatever. ;) )

I fall asleep the best when I listen to heavy metal, so I'm probably not the best person to ask.

Norah Jones...not "sleepy" but sweet and relaxing. Starbucks music.

The guy who said Sigur Ros is right too.

The album "Music For Airports" by Brian Eno is a VERY relaxing album, it's good sleeping music.

Of course, I personally like to fall asleep to Nine Inch Nails or heavy King Crimson, but I suspect there are few who feel the same.

Sigur Ros, Explosions In The Sky, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Sonna, 65 Days Of Static, the first Broken Social Scene album... Post-Rock in general.

Thanks, you too clearly :)

Yes, it depends on the piece, some are relaxing, others are intensely moving, others just fun and pleasant to sing/listen to.

I really recomend the band The Gathering.

There are four albuns you should get:
- If then else
- Mandylion
- Nighttime birds
- Souveriers

For those that want to get a feel of the band before geting anything, try the music Shrink by The Gathering.

I always listen to Boards of Canada when I want to fall asleep in a noisy area (Campfire Headphase album is a good one.)

I cant think of any other music in the genere. Air is also a good one for sleepy music, but they actually have lyrics.

Well, there's plenty of ambient drone stuff out there if you're willing to look for it, but I couldn't recommend anything close that band myself, since I lean toward the darker stuff.

Interesting, though.

Air's Moon Safari kept me sane throughout my exams. Other than that, some Pink Floyd is good for it, as is Coldplay.

thanks for reminding me about them!

iirc gescom is a side project of boc, but they sound very different. maybe "the album leaf" sounds a bit like them, or "B fleischmann" or "wixel", but it's been a while since i listened to any of these artists :( and my memory is quite bad nowadays.

That solo had so many dominant sevenths and ascending pentatonic scales it made Yngwie Malmsteen look like Raffi.

I go to bed every night to Radiohead's Creep or Springsteen's I'm on Fire. Guess that explains any weird dreams...
