Push back the test...

I hate when teachers or whatever say "I'm pushing back the test." It makes absolutely no sense. If you're pushing something back in time, it means you are bringing it closer to the "present", whcih is the opposite of what is meant. So, people should say they are postponing or pushing forward the test and not back.

Just a pet peeve I guess...

Consider it this way. The test when moved nearer to the present is being pushed towards the present, when the test is moved further from the present it is being pushed back. :)

"pushing" implies moving it in a direction away from you. If a test is in the future, pushing it would move it further into the future. If it's in the past, well, you can't change it, so pushing it further back into the past is impossible.

it is an equivalent to the movement in space, if you push something back in ine of the 3 dimensions, it is farer (more far?) away from you...

http://www.studip.uni-goettingen.de/pictures/smile/delorean.gif All aboard! Hahahahahaha.

Couldn't the teacher simply have said: I'm postponing the test?

(That "push back" sounds wrong timewise.)

Just think of time as relative to now. Then 'forward' means closer and 'back' means farther ... This is stupid. Who the hell cares, anyway.

Now if you want to discuss a really important little piece of misguided speech, how about 'irregardless'?

Here at Jolt, forward is back; back is forward. Let's do that time warp! :)

I always say I am "pushing" back something because it puts it further back in my calendar (think a non-digital calendar).

Maybe if you think of it that way it will help.

forward ≈ future
back ≈ past

Doesn't matter. We'll just put some trash into Mr. Fusion. No big deal! We'll just have to go back to post #9.:
