...and I feel fine. I'm looking forward to it and I think it may come in my lifetime.Climate change, nuclear war, comets, etc could all doom us all. Do you think it will happen in your lifetime? If so, are you looking forward to it?

i don't think it will come in my liftime. why would it, there have always been disasters, maybe the end of life as we know it, but not the end of human life per se.

the end of the world as we know it would be great because the world as we know it sucks!

The end of the world as a habitable place is probably thosuands of years off at least is what I am betting on.

Personally, I think the 21st century's going to be the best we've ever had in our entire history. Just look at the technological and economic development we've had in the past six years, let alone in the next 95. Things we couldn't dream of even only 10 years ago are a reality today, and that advancement is being combined with an increasingly globalized mindset that is tearing down the old barriers that stopped progress in the past.

If there's one thing that's true about human history, it's that the optimists are right many, many times more than the pessimists.

What, no poll?

I can't do anything about it if it comes catastrophically, so I don't care. If it's slow, I don't care unless it discomfits me and my lifestyle. So I basically don't care. End of the world, end of the schmorld. What's for dinner?

I'm actually looking forward to having kids and seeing them raise their kids in a world that doesn't have to worry about this sort of thing. So no, unlike some of you fundies I'm not looking forward to it. Thank you.

All throughout history people have predicted the end of the world, almost every generation believes it is the last. They've been wrong a thousand times before and they're wrong this time too.

Especially such dull end of world methods. Rogue neutron star is what I'm rooting for. Sure it wouldn't be in my lifetime, we'd detect it a century or so out, but still it'd be cool. Preferably a Magnetar.

You really are nauseatingly hopeful, do you know that?

However, I doubt the world is going to end; at this point, I've already survived at least 2 predicted apocalypses with my DVD and porno collections intact.

Just when I thought I was the only one on the board who thought such things!

Such boorish thoughts are those that treat the human race and the planet on which they exist as fagile and in need of being cradled! Civilization is neither something that has ever existed only on its toes. We are thiving.

I'm afraid that this belief in a coming Apocalypse held by so many on the Christian Right may be self-fulfilling. They look everywhere for signs of the End, and they find it everywhere. And in their reactionary politics and social commentary they end up making the problems worse. Just look at the Iraq war.

No, I'm not looking forward to the end of the world, my fundie aquaintance. I have not met a mate. My parents are in love with each other and have been for the past 21 years and continue to be perfectly in love with each other and I want that too, damn it. I also want to raise kids, or at least a daughter. An athletic daughter who's smarter than I am and overall a better person. :)

But what about nuclear terrorism? Nuclear materials are more freely available than they've ever been and terrorists aren't restrained by the doctrine of MAD.

That's true, but at the same time the terrorists' weapons are nothing compared to the destruction that a MIRV can wreak upon another nation. Dirty bombs and suitcase bombs would cause massive loss of life, but would not incur the kind of damage that MAD prevented.

Better nuclear security is a big issue; we need it, and we need it bad to preven t a major attack. Thankfully, there have been some technological improvements recently, but it's still pretty insecure.

No... it's just that we don't know as much about the times when the pessimists were right, because the relevant societies collapsed.

And that has happened many, many times.

But even so, society has survived and continues to grow and advance despite the loss of some civilizations along the way.

If you want nuclear destruction nothing beats the wrath of Pluto. An open solid core ramjet spewing fallout and spitting nukes around the world at supersonic speeds. It would have been quite a sight to and if I had to choose the WMD to kick off WW3 and probably kill me I'd want it to be Pluto.

You mean "the human species." Yes, it has survived... but it was never before in our power to destroy ourselves. Now it is. Not only is it, but we even can do it in several different ways.

and continues to grow and advance

Judging by the record of "growth" and "advancement", that's at best a mixed blessing.

I'll set up so that I can see it within the orbit of the moon. Perhaps give myself a telescope or something. After all, it's a good ways out to the moon. I'll watch the bastard on the way in.
